FAQs
How Many Teams Make the MLB Postseason?
A total of 12 teams make it into the MLB postseason. The 12-team field consists of six American League and six National League clubs. In each league, there are three division winners and three Wild Card teams. The three Wild Card teams are those with the best regular-season records among the teams that did not win their respective divisions.
How Does the MLB Postseason Work?
The MLB regular season consists of 162 games for each of the 30 teams. At the conclusion of the regular season (scheduled for Sept. 28, 2025), the postseason bracket is set.
The three division winners in each league are seeded No. 1 through No. 3, according to their winning percentage. The three Wild Card teams are seeded No. 4 through No. 6. In each league, the top two division winners (Seeds 1 and 2) receive a bye and automatically advance to the Division Series. The remaining four teams play in the Wild Card Series: Seed 3 vs. Seed 6, and Seed 4 vs. Seed 5, in a best-of-three format hosted by the higher seed.
The winners of the Wild Card Series advance to face the two top seeds in the Division Series, a best-of-five round. The highest remaining seed in each league faces the No. 1 seed, while the other Wild Card Series winner faces the No. 2 seed. The winners of the Division Series in each league advance to the League Championship Series (best-of-seven), and the respective champions from the American League and National League then meet in the best-of-seven World Series to decide the MLB champion.
