‘He’s Not Gonna Allow One Game To Dictate the Way He Plays the Rest of the Season’ — Dak Prescott on Terence Steele’s Poor Performance vs. the Eagles

0

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott discussed his support for right tackle Terence Steele after a season-high of allowed pressures came against the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Sunday, Steele gave up 12 pressures on Prescott during the game and has 28 on the season.

The offensive tackle has allowed six sacks against Prescott, which ties him for the second most in the league.

Dak Prescott Voices His Support for Terence Steele

During a community event, Prescott caught up with the media and was asked about his support for Steele in a video posted by Jon Machota.

The veteran quarterback discussed his faith in Steele saying, “Terence will be the first to tell you he wants to play better, and I know he’s going to play better.”

The quarterback pointed out that Steele is no stranger to adversity dating back to his rookie season as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

Steele was undrafted out of Texas Tech and joined the Cowboys. That same season, multiple players on the offensive line were struck by the injury bug, which forced Steele to step up after struggling that season.

“He’s a guy that has faced this adversity before. You talk about early in his career when he came in an undrafted free agent, and he had to step in and play for guys immediately and didn’t have success or maybe didn’t play to his standards early and then got it going,” Prescott said.

By last season, he was on what looked to be a fast track to becoming a Pro Bowl-worthy tackle until his season-ending ACL and MCL tears occurred in Week 14.

Over the summer, Steele signed a five-year contract extension with the Cowboys worth a maximum amount of $87.5 million.

Prescott believes in his right tackle, adding, “He’s not going to let one game put him down in the dump. He’s not gonna allow one game to dictate the way he plays the rest of the season.”

But the most significant component to the quarterback in ensuring better play is securing trust within each other. But overall, he thinks things will be fine moving forward.

Mike McCarthy’s Confidence Level for Steele

Although Steele is coming off his worst game this season, coaches and teammates agree that he remains accountable.

On Monday, Mike McCarthy said any time a player returns to the game from a significant joint injury, their first year back is a challenge.

The head coach added, “There’s things he has to continue to work on because of the injury and the surgery and things like that. He’s working through it. He won’t make any excuses. But that’s part of coming back that first year because there’s a first for everything.”

Overall, McCarthy said they have reviewed aspects of the game for Steele, and he feels confident that the young tackle will learn from Sunday’s game.

Who Is Carson Wentz? Looking Back on the Quarterback’s NFL Career

0

While Carson Wentz has spent the first nine weeks of the NFL season on the couch waiting for an opportunity, it looks like that wait is over. Reports are that Wentz will be joining Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams ahead of their Week 10 matchup with the division-rival Seattle Seahawks.

With Stafford dealing with a thumb injury and the team not getting the production they were looking for out of Brett Rypien last week, the signing makes sense for both parties involved.

Let’s take a closer look at Wentz and his career and what led him to Los Angeles for another NFL chance.

Who Is Carson Wentz?

Wentz was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and moved to North Dakota with his family at the age of three. He attended and played quarterback and defensive back for the football team at Century High School in Bismarck, ND. Wentz also played basketball and baseball at the school during that time.

Wentz wasn’t a highly recruited player out of high school and did not command the sort of attention a typical high NFL Draft pick would get. As a result, Wentz decided to stay close to home and committed to North Dakota State, a D1AA powerhouse program right in his own backyard.

Wentz’s Time at North Dakota State

Wentz redshirted his first season at North Dakota State, and while he saw limited action in his second and third seasons with the Bison, 2014 and 2015 were his time to shine. He became the Bison’s starting QB during his junior year in 2014 and led NDSU to a 15–1 record and a national championship title over Illinois State.

Entering his fifth and final season with the program, Wentz was once again the starting quarterback, but this season would not go as smoothly.

He started the first six games of the season before breaking his wrist against South Dakota State. Wentz missed the next eight games of the season due to the injury but was cleared in time to play in another national championship game at the end of the season.

The Bison won the game, securing their fifth straight title, and Wentz was named the Most Outstanding Player for the second straight year.

Wentz’s Time in The NFL

In the 2016 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Wentz in the first round with the No. 2 overall pick — becoming the highest-selected FCS quarterback taken in draft history.

Wentz spent the first five seasons of his career with the Eagles, where his performance would be very up and down. In 2017, the year Philadelphia won the Super Bowl with backup Nick Foles, Wentz was on an NFL MVP-type season before being injured in Week 14 against the Rams.

MORE: Aaron Rodgers Opens Up on Potential Timeline for New York Jets Return

However, from that point on, Wentz was unable to regain the magic he once had during that season and found himself being traded to the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2021 campaign. Wentz lasted only one season with the Colts before he was once again traded, this time to the Washington Commanders.

His stint with the Commanders was also a brief one, as he was released by the team in February following the 2022 season and has found himself out of the league waiting for another opportunity ever since.

As of today, Wentz is reported to be signing with the Rams and hoping for a chance to stick with Los Angeles and continue what was once a promising NFL career.

Dynasty Rookie WR Rankings Week 10: Zay Flowers and Tank Dell Leapfrog to the Top With Puka Nacua on Bye

0

With Week 9 of the NFL season in the books, we’re continuing to focus on the best rookie playmakers leaguewide. The 2023 rookie wide receiver group is putting up impressive numbers early on. Week 10 is right around the corner, so here are our best rookie receivers in fantasy football for the upcoming slate.

Who Are the Best Rookie WRs for Fantasy This Week?

Our NFL Week 10 dynasty wide receiver rankings are courtesy of the PFN Consensus Fantasy Rankings.

1) Zay Flowers, Baltimore Ravens

Even after two brutal finishes, Zay Flowers remains our top choice for fantasy managers who are deciding between rookie options. Admittedly, it’s close, as Tank Dell’s huge Week 9 put him into position for the top spot. But Flowers consistently saw more targets since Week 1 until last week’s stinker.

MORE: 2023 WR Fantasy Football Rankings

With only six catches for 20 yards over the last two weeks, Flowers will have to be reintroduced to the offense against the Cleveland Browns’ elite defense. Flowers caught three passes for 56 yards the last time these teams played. Look for the Baltimore Ravens to get Flowers more involved in a close, important divisional game.

2) Tank Dell, Houston Texans

This past week’s No. 1 overall receiver still can’t crack the top spot in our weekly rankings, even with Puka Nacua on a bye week. But it’s hard to blame our analysts, as Dell’s production has bounced between top-five and WR71 any given week. For as well as C.J. Stroud has played, he’s shown no firm loyalty to boosting either Dell’s or Nico Collins’ numbers, as he’ll throw to whoever is open without discrimination.

That’s a beautiful thing for the Houston Texans franchise but not for dynasty managers. Dell is a worthy lineup gamble as a WR2 or Flex option in Week 10. He’s just a true roll of the dice.

3) Jordan Addison, Minnesota Vikings

Jordan Addison’s scorching hot streak has continued in PPR leagues. With five straight top-32 finishes and seven overall, he’s a consistently good option for managers. However, Week 10 means that Justin Jefferson is eligible to return from the injured reserve.

Maybe that’s not enough to discourage managers from playing Addison against an impressive New Orleans Saints secondary. After all, Joshua Dobbs is in town, and he can apparently win regardless of whether he knows the names of the players to whom he’s throwing or not. But it is something to consider if you’re on the fence about fading Addison this week.

4) Demario Douglas, New England Patriots

Bye weeks have helped boost Demario Douglas a bit in our rankings, but it’s also a reflection of his own growth. The shifty route runner has finished in the top 29 of receivers twice in the last three weeks, making him a viable option for managers. With three straight games of four or more catches, Douglas is proving his long-term value for the team.

There’s also a bit of a “he’s due” factor with Douglas. He’s yet to score his first touchdown despite the role increase. If it weren’t for the fact his quarterback is Mac Jones, Douglas likely would have already reached paydirt this season.

5) Jayden Reed, Green Bay Packers

Outside of his two-touchdown performance in Week 2, Jayden Reed has settled into the ‘average’ zone for fantasy receivers quite often. He has had three finishes between WR32 and WR36 since then. Reed hasn’t been able to create explosive plays while stuck in Green Bay’s struggling offense, and managers must be careful if they want to start him.

6) Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle Seahawks

Even with Geno Smith struggling in Seattle, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is finding his stride and is emerging as a great option for managers. He’s finished as a top-34 receiver in each of his last three games and has increased his yards-per-catch average significantly since the bye week. Impact plays and more targets continue to flow his way.

Aaron Rodgers Opens Up on Potential Timeline for New York Jets Return

0

Seeing Aaron Rodgers throwing footballs pregame before his New York Jets take the field is still impressive, no matter how many times we’ve seen it over the last few weeks. The charismatic Rodgers has been seen walking around, talking to other players, laughing, and being himself as if he didn’t just suffer a major Achilles injury merely two months ago.

By all estimations, it looks as if Rodgers is way ahead of schedule, as these injuries can take upwards of a year to see a player come back from. With every 50-yard toss he is seen throwing, those watching can’t help but wonder just how close he may be to returning to the field.

While many heard Rodgers tell Los Angeles Chargers DB Derwin James that he was “a few weeks” away from returning, Rodgers took to The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday to clarify the comments and shed light on his real timeline.

When Will Aaron Rodgers Be Back on the Field?

The “few weeks” comment to James seemed a little far-fetched and unrealistic to those who heard it. Rodgers confirmed that it was a bit of an ambitious timeline at this point. He told McAfee that the comment was made “tongue in cheek” and that it’s “not anywhere near a realistic timeline.”

Rodgers did, however, point to the fact that he is “definitely obviously ahead of schedule” but “a long way off from being under center.”

With all that being true, it makes it even more impressive that Rodgers looks to be seemingly living his life out on Sundays and Mondays as he chucks the football around with his teammates even after just having a serious procedure.

When Is a Realistic Return Point for Rodgers?

No one knows for certain, and there are many factors involved, but some have speculated that a return around Christmas may be a good starting point for discussion. Christmas is a little over six weeks away, putting Rodgers on the field just 15 weeks after rupturing his Achilles tendon in Week 1 of the season.

While this seems like a crazy timeline and something that surely has never been done before, Rodgers and his medical team believe they have attacked his issue with a cutting-edge technique that drastically speeds up the healing process — making this timeline possible in their minds.

MORE: Rams Sign Carson Wentz — How Serious Is Matthew Stafford’s Thumb Injury?

There’s a lot to be done between now and then, and the odds remain stacked against Rodgers and the team to get this done. Yet, no one seems to be ruling it out as a realistic possibility. That alone is pretty wild to think about.

Rams Sign Carson Wentz: How Serious Is Matthew Stafford’s Thumb Injury?

0

Carson Wentz is an NFL quarterback again. The Los Angeles Rams signed the veteran signal-caller on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, ending a months-long stay in free agency during which Wentz didn’t generate any known interest.

Why did the Rams add Wentz now? Matthew Stafford missed Week 9 with a strained UCL in his right thumb. Is L.A. worried its starting QB could be sidelined for a significant period?

Why Did the Rams Sign Carson Wentz?

Stafford banged his thumb against a Dallas Cowboys defender’s helmet in Week 8, then aggravated the injury while hauling in a pass for a two-point conversion on a trick play.

With Stafford sidelined last week, the Rams turned to backup Brett Rypien, who made four starts for the Denver Broncos from 2020-22. Rypien struggled, completing fewer than half his attempts while finishing with the week’s sixth-worst QBR (24.1) in a 17-point loss to the Green Bay Packers.

MORE: When Can Rams RB Kyren Williams Return?

For Los Angeles, signing Wentz seems to be more about replacing Rypien than preparing for another Stafford absence. On Monday, head coach Sean McVay indicated that Stafford should be able to play when the Rams return from their Week 10 bye.

“Feel really good about Matthew and how much he’s attacked doing everything in his power to be back and to lead the way for this team,” McVay said. “And so we’re gonna look at a lot of different things over this break, but I’m optimistic that I don’t even think that’s something that we have to worry about.”

The Rams tried to sign John Wolford — in Los Angeles from 2020-22 — off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad last week, but the Bucs promoted the fourth-year QB rather than let L.A. poach him. The Rams instead promoted undrafted rookie free agent Dresser Winn from their practice squad to backup Rypien on Sunday.

Why Was Wentz Still a Free Agent?

Wentz spent the summer working out with former NFL head coach Jon Gruden. That could help explain why McVay, a branch on the Gruden coaching tree, added Wentz to the Rams’ roster.

But shouldn’t Wentz have been able to land a job before now? He was the clear top quarterback on the free agent market for months.

Wentz reportedly reached out to the New York Jets after Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury in Week 1, but Gang Green wasn’t interested. The Minnesota Vikings aren’t known to have contacted Wentz after losing Kirk Cousins, preferring to acquire Joshua Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals. And the New York Giants are rolling with UDFA Tommy DeVito while Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor are sidelined by injuries.

Wentz was essentially run out of town in both Indianapolis and Washington over the past two seasons. Speculatively, teams around the league might have been concerned about adding Wentz to their locker room.

Although Wentz isn’t expected to play immediately (or at all, unless Stafford suffers a setback), he only needs to look to the Rams’ 2022 campaign to see another quarterback who revitalized his career under McVay.

MORE: Week 10 NFL QB Rankings

Los Angeles claimed Baker Mayfield off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on Dec. 6. He started two days later and led the Rams to a miraculous comeback win over the Las Vegas Raiders, then helped the club to a dominant 51-14 victory against the Broncos in Week 15.

While Mayfield only received $4 million from the Buccaneers this offseason, he did land another starting quarterback job. If Wentz is asked to step in for the Rams and plays well, he might be able to continue his career, too.

Dynasty Rookie RB Rankings Week 10: Can Jahymr Gibbs and Zach Charbonnet Catch Bijan Robinson?

0

Week 9 of the NFL season is in the books, and our attention is drawn towards the top-performing rookie players nationwide. The 2023 rookie running back group has showcased impressive stats in the season’s early stages. As we approach Week 10, we have compiled a list of the best rookie rushers for fantasy football in the upcoming slate.

Who Are the Best Rookie RBs for Fantasy This Week?

Our NFL Week 10 dynasty running back rankings are courtesy of the PFN Consensus Fantasy Rankings.

1) Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons

It’s been five games since Bijan Robinson has hit the 100-yard mark, and he’s scored only two total touchdowns in that span. While we may look back at this stretch as an anomaly in his career, Robinson has not benefitted from landing in one of the most advantageous situations in the NFL. Falcons HC Arthur Smith refuses to feed Robinson.

With 13 or fewer touches in four straight games, Robinson is more like a Flex player than a bonafide star. He’s been efficient and impressive with those touches, but the quality of the offense and lack of volume is hurting Robinson just like it has TE Kyle Pitts.

Please, Arthur Smith, use your best players.

2) Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions

The rookie running back depth for Week 10 has been wiped out due to bye weeks, but Jahmyr Gibbs would be our RB2 back for the week, regardless. Gibbs, coming off top-five finishes in Weeks 7 and 8 before Detroit’s bye, faces the Los Angeles Chargers’ defense. That same defense ranks 21st in points and 30th in yards allowed this season.

Gibbs is in prime position to score and put up another impressive performance. While the Chargers have improved their run defense, Detroit should have its way in pounding the rock. Given Gibbs’ open-field elusiveness and ability to punch in goal-line carries, he might be a matchup winner in Week 10.

3) Zach Charbonnet, RB, Seattle Seahawks

A couple of big plays helped catapult Zach Charbonnet up the PPR RB standings in Week 8. His 53 rushing yards were a career-high, and he added 11 receiving yards. Still, he came back down to Earth in Week 9, finishing as RB52 with only 13 yards.

If Charbonnet can get the starting job from Kenneth Walker III, he’s in prime position to be a stud in this offense. Seattle doesn’t seem keen to hand him more touches than the four-to-eight range he’s been stuck in, though.

4) Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans

After finishing within the top 30 running backs in PPR leagues three times in a four-week span, Tyjae Spears’ momentum has died quite a bit. The Week 7 bye week failed to provide any type of further spark. Spears has finished as the RB48 and RB46 in the last two weeks.

MORE: PPR Rankings

With RB Derrick Henry staying in town through the trade deadline, Spears appears to be more of a Flex alternate for rosters dealing with bye weeks. He’s a less attractive option than he was a month ago.

5) Roschon Johnson, Chicago Bears

Unfortunately, Roschon Johnson’s RB16 finish in Week 1 is looking more like an aberration as the weeks pass by. He’s finished as RB50 or lower in his last four games played and notched fewer than seven touches in all but one of those contests. The Bears’ hierarchy will be further muddied by the eventual returns of RB Khalil Herbert and QB Justin Fields.

6) Jaleel McLaughlin, Denver Broncos

It seemed the Broncos had successfully found an offensive weapon to help alleviate the stress of producing explosive plays. Instead of continuing to lean into Jaleel McLaughlin’s playmaking, though, the team has continued to limit his touches. McLaughlin is averaging 7.1 yards per carry and has three total touchdowns on the season — but only 50 touches.

McLaughlin can’t be trusted in your lineups unless he’s getting closer to 10 touches a game. He had found that range a month ago but has been less of a priority over the last three games.

The Miami Dolphins Should Use the Bye To Extend Austin Jackson

0

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Some five dozen players have seen the field on offense or defense for the Miami Dolphins in 2023.

Only one has logged every possible snap:

Right tackle Austin Jackson.

Yes, the same Austin Jackson who appeared in just two games in 2022 because of injury.

“It’s a blessing,” Jackson said Tuesday after the Dolphins’ last practice before this weekend’s bye. “That’s everything I wanted, especially coming from my situation last year, to be able to be healthy and get every opportunity on that field that I can get.”

He’s making the most of that opportunity — and in the process, making himself a lot of money.

Market Valuation for Miami Dolphins RT Austin Jackson

Jackson is a free agent at season’s end — which the Dolphins made possible by declining to pick up the fifth-year option of his rookie contract back in the spring.

The decision made all the sense in the world at the time. Jackson wasn’t the player we see now early in his career, and the Dolphins would have been on the hook for his fully guaranteed $14.2 million base salary in 2024.

But now that Jackson has proven that he’s not just a capable starting tackle, but a good one, Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel would be wise to lock him up long term, especially since Connor Williams, Robert Hunt, and Isaiah Wynn are also on expiring deals.

Jackson told reporters Tuesday that, to the best of his knowledge, the Dolphins have not approached his representation about an extension.

“I try to keep out of that stuff and just do my job,” Jackson said. “… This is kind of the guy I am, especially going into this type of [year] for me personally. You know, it’s playing football at the end of the day. I have nothing to worry about with that. Thinking about future uncertainties and stuff like that, which is like my contract, it’s too much for me to think about.”

MORE: Latest Injury Update on Jaylen Waddle

Jackson is deserving of a raise. In 578 snaps this year, he has committed three penalties and has allowed one sack.

So what would an extension look like?

According to Spotrac, Jackson’s market valuation is four years, $42.7 million. That averages out to $10.6 million a year, which would rank 26th among NFL tackles. If Jackson’s arrow continues pointing up, it could end up looking like great value.

“I’ve never had a rep that I didn’t like that didn’t motivate me to get better,” Jackson said. “I think that’s what it’s about staying in the NFL. Always getting better every day. That’s something that [Brian Flores] taught me, when he was here, you know, Flo did a good job with that, coached me real well in that aspect, getting better every day.

“And that’s just really what it is in the league. You just gotta get better every day. A bunch of people trying to play, and you got to be at your best.”

NFL Betting Trends: Unders Hitting at a Historically High Rate

0

While there have been quite a few notable NFL betting trends from the first half of the season, the one that stands out the most is the rate at which unders have been hitting on the point totals this season.

According to Evan Abrams at The Action Network, unders are now 83-52-1 (61.5%) for the season, which is the highest percentage through nine weeks since 1991.

NFL Betting Trends: Historically High Rate for Unders

Unders improved to 83-52-1 for the season after going 11-3 in Week 14. For the season, unders have hit in the majority of the games in all but two weeks. On prime-time games, unders have been cashing at an even higher rate, going 22-7 (75.8%) through nine weeks.

Given the success of unders so far in 2023, it’s no surprise that NFL offenses have been far worse this season than in recent years.

According to Pro Football Reference, NFL teams, on average, are scoring 21.7 points per game this season, which is tied with 2017 for the lowest in the last 10 years. This season’s average of 330.1 yards per game is the lowest in the league since 2008 as well.

As unders have continued to dominate this season, how have the oddsmakers adjusted to setting totals?

Last week, with 10 of the 14 teams starting backup quarterbacks, the average total was 42.1, which was the lowest for a single week since 2008. This week, six of the 14 games have a total lower than 40 points, including two of the three prime-time games.

MORE: Early NFL Week 10 Predictions and Picks Against the Spread

“Bettors have definitely noticed how strong unders have been, and it’s been a far more popular play compared to early in the season,” said PointsBet trader Wyatt Satre in the company’s newsletter.

“From the start of the season to October 1, 38% of the handle for straight bets on totals was on the under. From October 2 to November 5, that number is up to 53% on the under.”

Satre’s quote lines up with what Adam Pullen, Assistant Director of Trading at Caesars Sportsbook, told Pro Football Network earlier this season, saying that the public is more keen to bet unders than in years past.

With how much money bettors have been winning on unders this season, you would imagine that there will be even less money on overs each week as long as this trend continues.
