The Vikings have fought back to 4-4 and now face a defining matchup against the Baltimore Ravens at U.S. Bank Stadium. Quarterback Lamar Jackson and a revived run game lead the Ravens. Minnesota enters determined to prove its win in Detroit signaled real progress, not a one-week spark, and to show it can match the Ravens’ power and discipline snap for snap.
Here are five Vikings players who could shape Sunday’s outcome.
1) J.J. McCarthy, Quarterback
The second-year quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, continues to develop as the season unfolds. His performance in Detroit was encouraging. He threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns, added a rushing score, and delivered clutch throws in tight moments. The next step is sustaining that rhythm against a defense that disguises pressure better than most.
The Ravens have allowed just 13 points per game over their last three outings. They crowd the line before the snap, rotate safeties late, and challenge quarterbacks to make fast, confident reads. McCarthy ranks 36th in PFSN’s QBi. He will need to recognize those rotations and stay composed when protection breaks down.
2) Aaron Jones Sr., Running Back
Aaron Jones changed the look of Minnesota’s offense when he returned last week. He ran for 78 yards on nine carries and caught two passes for 20 more before leaving with a shoulder injury. His burst through the line and ability to create on first down gave the offense balance and confidence.

All signs suggest that he will play on Sunday, although his workload may depend on his pain tolerance. His vision and acceleration are the keys to keeping the offense out of long third downs. Baltimore thrives when it can bring pressure on passing downs, and Jones’ ability to set up manageable distances will determine whether the Vikings can stay ahead of the chains. Expect head coach Kevin O’Connell to use him creatively, mixing run and pass looks to slow the Ravens’ linebackers.
3) Andrew Van Ginkel, Outside Linebacker
Andrew Van Ginkel’s return to health has brought stability to Minnesota’s defense. He looked sharp in Detroit, setting the edge, dropping into coverage, and disrupting blocking schemes. Against Baltimore, his patience and awareness will be tested.
The Ravens love to stretch the edge with read-options and bootlegs, forcing defenders to overcommit. Van Ginkel’s ability to hold contain and react to Jackson’s movements will be critical. If he stays disciplined, he can close running lanes and force Baltimore to play in tighter spaces, where the Vikings’ linebackers excel.
4) Blake Cashman, Linebacker
Blake Cashman ranks 25th in PFSN’s LBi. He has become one of Minnesota’s most reliable defenders. He played every snap against the Lions, recording 14 tackles, a forced fumble, and a tackle for loss. His speed and instincts allow him to track plays from sideline to sideline and finish cleanly.

On Sunday, he’ll be tasked with limiting Jackson’s scrambles and managing Henry’s inside runs. The blitzes that paired Cashman and Ivan Pace Jr. caused problems for Detroit’s protection. Expect that look again to test Baltimore’s communication up front. Cashman’s timing, tackling, and awareness will determine how much success Jackson and Henry have on the ground.
5) Harrison Smith, Safety
Harrison Smith remains one of the smartest defenders in football. His presence near the line of scrimmage creates confusion for quarterbacks, and he still times his blitzes as well as anyone. He broke up a key third-down pass against the Lions and disguised coverage effectively throughout the game. Smith ranks 58th in PFSN’s SAFi.
The Ravens will challenge his patience with heavy sets and play-action. Smith’s ability to recognize routes as they develop and communicate with safety Josh Metellus will be vital in limiting big plays. If he can bait Jackson into hesitation or force late throws, the Vikings defense can control the middle of the field.
