ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky Offers Pointed Criticism of Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky praised J.J. McCarthy’s talent but pointed to one habit that could hold the Vikings quarterback back.

The Minnesota Vikings are preparing for one of their toughest tests of the season as they host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. At 4-4, Minnesota sits in the middle of the NFC playoff race, trying to prove that last week’s win in Detroit was more than a brief spark.

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy continues to be at the center of that effort, showing growth in poise and decision-making but still facing questions about his readiness to carry the offense against elite defenses.

ESPN Analyst Evaluates J.J. McCarthy’s Progress and Challenges

During Thursday’s episode of “Get Up,” ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky broke down McCarthy’s development through his first few starts. He called last week’s performance “impressive,” noting that it was only McCarthy’s third NFL game and that the young passer continues to show natural command when operating within structure.

“When the number one receiver is open, he’s very good, and that’s where this falls upon Kevin O’Connell,” Orlovsky said. “How much can he scheme up to allow J.J. McCarthy to play his best? Because when he knows the coverage and he thinks that first anticipated read is going to be the guy, it’s really good. He throws it really good. He throws it with super confidence.”

Orlovsky added that McCarthy’s consistency drops when he’s forced to move off that first read, pointing to a visible “tension” in his body language and a tendency to overfire shorter throws. He said those habits are typical of a quarterback still adjusting to the timing and speed of the NFL, but emphasized that the Vikings can help by tailoring their game plan to McCarthy’s strengths.

Despite the critique, Orlovsky credited McCarthy’s arm strength and willingness to attack downfield when confident in his read. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to a knee injury and then five games this year with a high ankle sprain. In his three games played this season, McCarthy ranks 36th in PFSN’s QBi.

Orlovsky framed this weekend’s game against Baltimore as an important checkpoint for both McCarthy and O’Connell to show progress against one of the AFC’s top defenses.

Orlovsky concluded the segment by picking the Ravens to defeat the Vikings, saying Baltimore’s improved pass rush and defensive discipline could pose a significant challenge for a young quarterback still learning to adapt on the fly.
