Hall of Famer Rondé Barber Predicts Close Friend Mike Tomlin Will Never Return to Coaching: ‘I Think He’s Done’

Rondé Barber says Mike Tomlin privately told him last year he was finished coaching, long before the Steelers’ stunning announcement this week.

Mike Tomlin’s decision to step down as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ HC on Tuesday immediately set off a wave of speculation about what comes next. Pittsburgh is now beginning its first head coaching search since 2007, and Tomlin’s future has quickly become just as compelling as the identity of his successor. A longtime friend and former player, however, says the answer may already be settled.

Rondé Barber Says Tomlin Told Him His Time Was Ending Long Before the Announcement

On The Ronde Barber Show, the Hall of Fame cornerback revealed that Tomlin privately told him last year that he was preparing to step away from coaching, well before any public indication of a change in Pittsburgh. Barber thinks ‘He is Done.’

“Last year, I was in Long Island with him, and he told me then,” Barber said. “He said, ‘I think this is my last year,’ and didn’t say anything to anybody else for the entire year.”

Barber and Tomlin have a long-standing relationship that dates back to Tomlin’s early coaching days in Tampa Bay. Tomlin served as the Buccaneers’ defensive backs coach from 2001 to 2005 and was part of the staff that drafted Barber in 2002.

That professional connection evolved into a personal one. The two remain close friends, vacation together every year, and Tomlin even chose Barber to present him with his gold jacket at his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction.

That closeness is what gives Barber confidence in what he is hearing from Tomlin now.

“For all of y’all out there, Mike Tomlin started as a Buc,” Barber said. “He was the first person really in the building that truly believed in me, truly told me that I was gonna be the player that I ended up being. There really are no words to describe how good of a football coach he is. Mike’s a friend, man. He’s like family to me. We vacation every year, and there’s a lot of stories out there about Mike coming up and wanting to take one year off and go coach. I’m gonna tell you right now, dude, I think he’s done. I think he wants to be done.”

Barber’s account suggests Tomlin’s decision was not driven by the outcome of the 2025 season or the recent organizational changes in Pittsburgh. It was something he had already made peace with privately.

That has significant implications for the Steelers. If Tomlin truly views this as the end of his coaching career rather than a break, Pittsburgh will not be able to trade his rights to another team for draft compensation, a path that some franchises have taken with departing coaches. Most recently, the Saints traded coach Sean Payton to the Broncos a year after Payton stepped away. Payton spent the 2023 season broadcasting for Fox.

With Tomlin stepping away after an 18-year run that included a Super Bowl title and zero losing seasons, Barber’s comments point toward a full transition into retirement, even as teams around the league continue to monitor his availability.

The Steelers finished the final season under him with a 10-7 record. According to the PFSN’s NFL offense metrics, their offense ranked 14th, and their defense ranked 16th in the defensive metric.
