The 2024 NFL Draft has been the focus for all 32 teams, and that didn’t change for the Cowboys. They made moves and landed someone at a position of need.

Cowboys Take OT Tyler Guyton In Round 1

Holding the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Dallas decided to kick things off with a trade back. They sent the 24th pick to the Detroit Lions in return for the 29th overall pick and the 73rd overall pick in the third round.

With the 29th pick, the Cowboys selected Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton to fill what was a major offensive line need. “I just wanted to be the first to tell you… you’re a Dallas Cowboy,” said owner Jerry Jones in his call to Guyton.

According to PFN’s Ian Cummings, Guyton grades out as a top-75 pick. However, he was worthy of Day 2 selection. “He’s worthy of Day 2 capital and could be an impact NFL starter if given time to further his development and keep honing his skills,” said Cummings.

Cowboys Listed as a Loser on Day 1 of the Draft

According to PFN’s Dallas Robinson, the Cowboys were one of the losers on Day 1. “The Cowboys‘ decision to trade down from No. 24 to No. 29 was a solid deal on paper,” said Robinson.

“But by moving back, the Cowboys also missed out on Duke OL prospect Graham Barton, who might’ve been a Day 1 starter at center or guard. Barton, who went 26th to the Buccaneers, was the type of pro-ready lineman the win-now Cowboys should have been targeting.

“While Guyton could turn into a Pro Bowler down the road, choosing a potential project was an odd turn for Dallas,” said Robinson.

Jerry Jones Reveals Running Back Draft Plan

After Day 1 of the draft, Jerry Jones spoke to the media. In sharing what happened on Day 1 and their processes, he also revealed their thoughts on Texas running back Jonathon Brooks, who is someone they could likely target in the second round.

“We got him high, high, high [on our board],” said Jones. “He’s a good player.”

The Cowboys currently hold the 56th pick in the second round, likely looking to take a running back whether Brooks is there or not. Coming into the draft, running back was one of the Cowboys’ biggest needs.
