Lane Kiffin continues to stir tensions with Ole Miss despite taking over LSU almost six months ago. He confidently asserted that if Ole Miss administrators hadn’t forced him out the door before the CFP, the Rebels would have beaten Miami in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal and played for a national title. Now, Pete Golding has spoken on it, and it’s turning heads.
How the College Football World Reacted to Pete Golding’s Response to Lane Kiffin
Kiffin claimed that promoting defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach threw off the entire structural chemistry of the team. Specifically, Kiffin argued that Golding was forced to manage the game from the sideline rather than calling the defense from his usual vantage point in the press box.
“I don’t think that had any impact on why we didn’t win the Miami game,” Golding stated flatly. The reactions on social media were immediate.

A closer look at the analytics tells a very different story. Ole Miss didn’t lose the Fiesta Bowl because of schematic errors or delayed play-calls from the sideline. They lost because Mario Cristobal’s Miami squad completely dominated the physical elements of the game.
Miami suffocated the game by winning the time-of-possession battle by a staggering margin of more than 22 minutes. They systematically wore down the Rebels’ front seven, running 88 total offensive plays compared to Ole Miss’ 60.
For now, Golding has to navigate the ghost of Lane Kiffin, and it has become a mandatory part of his first offseason as the Rebels’ commander. Between Kiffin’s constant media barbs and a public offseason tampering feud with Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Ole Miss has found itself squarely in the national crosshairs.
