When UNC football hired legendary HC Bill Belichick to become their next head coach, there were expectations for him to turn the program around. He brought prestige and a staff that had potential to be great, but that’s nowhere near what happened.
In Belichick’s first year with UNC, there was controversy all season, and the product on the field was nowhere near good enough. The hope this offseason was that no more controversies would plague the program. Sadly, that has not happened.
In Shocking Move, UNC Puts GM Michael Lombardi on Paid Leave
With the prestige Belichick brought in his staff, Michael Lombardi was one of those people who stood out. Lombardi had mountains of pro experience scouting players and working in successful front offices. On paper, he was a perfect candidate to work with Belichick to build this UNC roster and create a competitive team. But it seems that potential outcome will not be reached with Lombardi on the staff.
Today, UNC announced that it will place GM Michael Lombardi on paid leave, per Andy Staples:

UNC’s statement did not disclose a reason. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the leave stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee, and that an investigation into the complaint is pending. The specifics of the complaint have not been made public.
ESPN’s “Get Up” reacted to the breaking news and spoke about some of Lombardi’s struggles as GM.
Mike Greenberg began with: “He’s (Lombardi) had a few somewhat notorious moments last year, including when he told Patriots scouts that they wouldn’t get access to the Tar Heels program. He also boasted that Carolina would be the 33rd NFL team; they went 4-8 in Belichick’s first season, didn’t have a single player selected in this year’s NFL Draft.”

The group of Greenberg, Dan Orlovsky, and Dan Graziano then discussed the program’s struggles, how surprising this move was, and the pressure on Belichick to win early.

NFL Draft analyst Anthony Russo spoke about how much trouble UNC brought to their program by hiring Belichick and Lombardi, then also revealed that people may not be upset about Lombardi being out, “Man it can’t be understated how much North Carolina hurt their football program with hiring Lombardi/Belichick It also can’t be understated how *not* sad football people are that Lombardi is out”.
CFB analyst Bruce Feldman labeled the Belichick move a disaster, and it looks even worse after Lombardi was put on paid leave: “This has truly been a disastrous hire for Bill Belichick. Now, his longtime confidant, UNC GM Mike Lombardi, has been placed on administrative leave”.

CFB insider Pete Nakos revealed that this move to put Lombardi on paid leave was not made by Belichick, and instead came from the school itself: “Sources have told @On3 that the final decision to place general manager Mike Lombardi on paid administrative leave was made by the North Carolina administration, not Bill Belichick.”

It’s difficult to predict how a program’s season will go, but with the recent Lombardi news and Belichick’s struggles so far, UNC may be in for another long season. Can they turn it around? Maybe, but that’s not likely.
