Ex-Chargers DT Breiden Fehoko Torches Los Angeles for Prioritizing 2027 Comp Picks Over Protecting Justin Herbert

Breiden Fehoko criticized the Chargers for prioritizing compensatory picks over improving the roster and protecting quarterback Justin Herbert.

The Los Angeles Chargers’ approach to the 2026 free agency period has been heavily criticized by fans and members of the media, including former franchise player Breiden Fehoko, who took to his account on X to express his frustration with the team’s planning and the importance being placed on the compensatory pick formula for 2027.

Breiden Fehoko Criticizes Chargers’ Approach With 2026 Free Agency

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Super Bowl window may not make the team a favorite in the AFC yet, but it is certainly open. Over the last two seasons, the team has reached the playoffs, losing both times in the Wild Card round. In 2025, the main issues were on the offensive line and the number of injuries the team had to deal with.

With significant cap space available, it was expected that the team would be a buyer in this free agency period, bringing in targeted additions to strengthen the roster.

What actually happened, however, was disappointing for those expecting a more aggressive approach.

The Chargers focused only on bringing in players who would not interfere with the compensatory pick formula for 2027, meaning players who had been released or who were not tendered by their previous teams. That way, the franchise could receive extra picks in the following year’s draft. Fehoko spoke out against this strategy.

“Imagine being a general manager watching your Quarterback get sent to the slaughterhouse weekly, and when you have over 90 million in cap to sign free agents you refuse to do so because they’d count against the comp pick formula. Terrorist as* sh*t,” Fehoko wrote on his X account.

Among the various roster-building strategies a team can adopt, compensatory draft picks are an annual objective that many general managers pursue. They are distributed between the third and seventh rounds of the draft and exist to protect teams that lost significant players in free agency without replacing them.

Using this formula is not necessarily a problem, but Fehoko’s point is that the Chargers chose the wrong moment to prioritize it. With cap space available, the expectation was that the team would invest in improving the roster already this season. Justin Herbert, ranked 11th in PFSN’s QB Impact metric, had a strong year in 2025 and proved he can take the team far.

But with the additions the team made, the feeling is that the Chargers are thinking more about the medium-term future than about winning right away this season. It is also worth noting that the Super Bowl will be played at the Chargers’ home stadium this year, Levi’s Stadium, which could serve as extra motivation for the team.

It is uncertain whether this strategy will work, but it is a risky one. The 2027 draft class is indeed projected to be deeper in talent than the 2026 class, but focusing too much on the future has already cost many coaches and general managers their jobs.

The plan will need to be executed very well to avoid becoming a major regret.
