The Los Angeles Chargers’ offseason has divided opinions among fans and analysts. While some prefer the more conservative approach, others argue that the franchise is wasting an opportunity, and the signing of DT Dalvin Tomlinson may indicate why the team is following this path.
Chargers’ Preparing To Receive Multiple Compensatory Picks in 2027 NFL Draft
Among the various roster-building strategies a team can adopt, compensatory draft picks are an annual objective that many general managers pursue. They are distributed between the third and seventh rounds of the draft and exist to protect teams that lost significant players in free agency without replacing them.
There is also a compensation mechanism when a team loses a front-office member from a minority group.
In this case, the Chargers appear to be using the nuances of the rule to replace their players and make free-agent signings without affecting the compensatory pick formula for 2027.
Insider Ari Meirov pointed to this strategy and noted that, despite having significant salary cap space, the team is being extremely cautious and conservative in its signing patterns to avoid affecting the formula in a 2027 draft class expected to be loaded.
“The #Chargers, despite having over $90M in cap space this offseason, have been very cognizant of the compensatory formula as they look to add draft picks in 2027,” Meirov posted.

Tomlinson was released by the Arizona Cardinals and therefore does not count toward the compensatory pick formula. Players need to have their contracts expire for the formula to affect it and potentially remove the chance of the franchise receiving an extra pick. And this was not an isolated case for the Chargers this offseason.
Tyler Biadasz and Alec Ingold were also released by their franchises before signing with the Chargers, and Keaton Mitchell was not tendered. This confirms that the franchise is looking toward the future to build the roster through rookies rather than expensive free agents in this 2026 window.
The Chargers’ defense ranked eighth in the 2025 season according to the PFSN Defense Impact Meter, and there was an expectation that at least this unit would receive more investment to maintain its level, but aside from the Khalil Mack extension, the team has not moved aggressively.
The 2027 draft class is considered deeper than the 2026 class, which helps justify the Chargers’ approach.
With the team reaching the playoffs in two consecutive seasons and failing to advance past the Wild Card round, it is understandable that many expected a more aggressive approach in this free agency window.
