When quarterback Fernando Mendoza entered the transfer portal in late 2024, blue-chip programs from the SEC and Big Ten immediately came calling. In the end, his decision ultimately came down to Curt Cignetti’s Indiana Hoosiers and Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs.
While Georgia seemed like an obvious choice, a fateful late-night moment flipped the script. As Mendoza recently revealed, one crucial, after-hours decision altered his career trajectory.

Mendoza had no shortage of options as one of the most highly sought-after quarterbacks available when he entered the portal. Georgia was almost becoming his destination before a late-night call changed things altogether.

Mendoza recently recalled the story during an interview alongside Las Vegas Raiders veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. Cousins encouraged Fernando to explain how a phone call to Smart that never connected changed the course of his career. The Raiders rookie openly shared the unusual sequence of events.
“This is like folklore on the Odyssey right here,” Mendoza said. “You know, he’s like singing the fable. But it was a late-night decision, and you know it was really coming between the two.
“And at the end of the day, basically took another night to rest on it, and then at that time, I was like, I wanted to go to Georgia, but my mom was like, ‘Yo, you got to go to Indiana.’”
When Smart never received the expected call, Mendoza’s change of heart was already set in motion, sending the quarterback to the Big Ten instead.
Mendoza eventually became Curt Cignetti’s fifth different starting quarterback in five consecutive seasons, but unlike his predecessors, he delivered an unprecedented level of success for the Hoosiers.
He led the team to a perfect 16-0 season, winning Indiana their first-ever national championship while also becoming the first Heisman Trophy winner in program history.
Under Cignetti, Mendoza produced great numbers, throwing for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns while recording only six interceptions. His outstanding campaign earned him a No. 2 ranking in PFN’s QB Impact Ranking with a 93.3 grade.
During that season, he collected several major individual honors, including CFP National Championship Game Offensive MVP, Peach Bowl Offensive MVP, and Big Ten Championship Game MVP. His spectacular Indiana campaign propelled him to the No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft as the Raiders’ potential franchise quarterback of the future.

However, Mendoza may have to wait a little longer before officially taking over the starting job in Las Vegas. For now, veteran Kirk Cousins appears to be a reliable option under center while the Raiders give their rookie quarterback additional time to develop and determine when he is fully ready to take the reins.
