‘So Blessed To Do This’ — Sky Star Angel Reese Proudly Unveils Outdoor Court in Chicago

Angel Reese partners with Cash App and Project Backboard to unveil renovated basketball court in Chicago’s Oakwood Beach for children.

Angel Reese’s 2025 season has been iconic. She kicked off the year by notching her 30th career double-double, surpassing Candace Parker and Natalie Williams to become the fastest player to reach the mark in WNBA history.

Off the court, Reese was crowned as BET’s 2025 Sportswoman of the Year for the third time in a row. But apart from winning awards, the 23-year-old is also winning hearts as she surprised fans by unveiling a new court in Chicago.

Angel Reese Unveils Chicago’s Renovated Outdoor Court

This project was undertaken in partnership with Cash App, Project Backboard, and the Angel C. Reese Foundation. Nestled near the Oakwood beach, the vibrant teal‑and‑yellow court immediately stood out against the city’s brick‑and‑steel backdrop. The public court features a state‑of‑the‑art design, a re-colored and rebuilt court, and is surrounded by green pastures.

On Instagram, Reese posted stories and wrote, “New court in Chicago! So blessed to be able to do this in a second city that I can now call HOME!” She also shared the same on her official X account.

The “Bayou Barbie” shared several clips and snapshots on X. In one retweeted post, she wrote, “Make sure you stop by and tag me in pics when you’re in the CHI! Thank you THIS LOOKS UNREALLLLLL.”

Since launching the Angel C. Reese Foundation in 2023, she has spearheaded court refurbishments in her native Maryland and funded scholarships at LSU, where she starred in college.

The newly renovated Chicago court is a partnership between Reese’s non-profit foundation, alongside Project Backboard and Cash App. They aim to renovate public basketball courts in the South Side of Chicago and empower girls and women with the help of sports and financial education.

Reese shared her intention to “give back to the city” she now calls her home. “I’m so proud to partner with Cash App to give back to the city I’ve fallen in love with, in such a meaningful way,” she said.

“This court is more than just a place to hoop, it’s a space where girls can see what’s possible for them on and off the court. I’m excited to work with Cash App to create more opportunities for the next generation of basketball players and leaders,” Reese said in her statement, according to a Business Wire report.

Reese’s Chicago Sky Fell vs. Washington Mystics

Meanwhile, the Chicago Sky needs a drastic change in strategy to turn their losses into wins and stay afloat this 2025 WNBA season. Although Reese has been victorious on the personal front, her team has been struggling all season.

On the court, the Sky’s power forward added 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Washington Mystics on June 17. The Sky surged out to a 44–32 halftime lead, fueled by Reese’s ten rebounds. But the Mystics roared back, led by Brittney Sykes’ 32 points on 13‑for‑24 shooting, flipping the game in the third quarter. The Mystics limited the Sky to just 12 points in the third quarter as they put 24 on the board.

Chicago committed 22 turnovers and ultimately fell 79–72. Despite Reese’s double‑double, the Sky lost another match after winning against the Connecticut Sun on June 15. Before Connecticut, Chicago lost to the Atlanta Dream, New York Liberty, and Indiana Fever consecutively.

The Sky will face the Phoenix Mercury on June 21 at the Wintrust Arena before heading to meet the Dream in Atlanta on June 22.
