The Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry produced another dramatic chapter Sunday, but this time the biggest talking point came from the officials.
Late in overtime, Clark was called for a controversial foul on Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard after fighting through a screen from Reese. The decision gave Howard three free throws with the Fever clinging to a late lead, and the call immediately became a lightning rod for WNBA observers.

The controversial sequence came after Kelsey Mitchell scored a layup to put Indiana ahead 93-88 with 13.6 seconds remaining in overtime.
Atlanta called a timeout, and Dream coach Karl Smesko drew up a play designed to free Howard. Clark trailed the Dream star by a step and appeared to make only minimal contact with her back before the officials blew the whistle.

Fever coach Stephanie White immediately challenged the call.
The broadcasters covering the game expected the decision to be overturned after review. Instead, the referees upheld the original ruling, leaving Indiana with plenty to complain about and sending social media into overdrive.
“The WNBA refs are a disgrace,” an X user wrote.

“Reffing in the WNBA is always abysmal but it somehow always seems to get worse when the Fever are playing,” another X user commented.

“Every time I see what I think might be the worst call in history, these WNBA refs manage a worse one, usually screwing over CC and the Fever,” a WNBA observer added.
“Better reffing in youth leagues. They actually pay these people?” a basketball supporter wondered.

“Just a ridiculous call. Both announcers were stunned,” an Arkansas Razorbacks fan tweeted.
Howard calmly stepped to the line and knocked down all three free throws, cutting Indiana’s lead to 93-91 with 10.8 seconds remaining.
White then went right back to Clark on the other end. The Fever superstar was immediately fouled and calmly made both free throws, restoring Indiana’s cushion.
Atlanta had one more chance after another timeout, but Indiana’s defense denied Howard another clean look. The Dream ultimately had to turn to backup guard Isobel Borlase, who launched a 23-footer that missed.
Clark secured the rebound to officially put the game away. The finish capped an impressive comeback by Indiana. The Fever entered the fourth quarter trailing 72-64 but outscored Atlanta 17-9 in the final period to force overtime.
Reese also had a chance to win it in regulation but missed a point-blank attempt that could have handed the Dream the victory.
Indiana ultimately survived the extra period 14-10.
For all the excitement surrounding Clark and Reese, however, the final minutes left the officials stealing much of the spotlight.
The Fever got the win, Clark got the last laugh, and the referees got the internet’s full attention, a familiar recipe whenever these two WNBA stars meet.
