Angel Reese Joins Tennis Legend Serena Williams’ Elite Company After Winning BET Sportswoman of the Year

WNBA star Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky has joined elite company after winning the BET Sportswoman of the Year for the third consecutive time. Only tennis legend Serena Williams has won the award this many times, putting the 23-year-old in elite company.

Reese fought off steep competition for the award this year, including beating out Olympic gymnast Simone Biles. This is a tremendous honor for Reese to beat out the Team USA legend for the prestigious award.

Angel Reese Wins BET Sportswoman of the Year

The BET Awards, which celebrate excellence in entertainment and sports, gave the Sportsman of the Year award to NFL star quarterback Jalen Hurts, who led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory last season.

Reese is already the most fearsome rebounder in the WNBA, dominating the glass on a nightly basis. She led the league in rebounding as a rookie last year with 13.1 per game and is leading the league again this year with 12.3 per game.

Her elite rebounding has helped her compile 29 double-doubles in 41 career games thus far, making her one of the top forwards in the league. And at her age, she might still be getting better.

Additionally, she won the Defensive Player of the Year award for Unrivaled — the new three-on-three women’s basketball league — while helping her team win the championship in the league’s first year.

These accolades bolstered Reese’s already impressive case, helping propel her to her third straight BET Sportswoman award.

Reese received congratulations from her team, the Sky, as they posted on X: “Keep shining, Angel.”

In response to the win, Reese posted a prayer emoji on X to show her appreciation.

Some have expressed surprise at Reese winning the award over WNBA star A’ja Wilson, for instance, who is averaging 22 points and 9.9 rebounds for the Las Vegas Aces. Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier, who leads the WNBA in scoring with 25.5 points per game, also would have been an outstanding candidate.

Regardless, there’s no denying Reese’s status as one of the best players in the WNBA and a force on both ends of the floor. While only in her second season, she’s already one of the faces of the league and one of the most famous female athletes in the world.

Her career is off to an incredible start, and her BET award is just the latest example of that. Anytime you join a club with one of the greatest tennis players ever, you’re in pretty good company.
