‘Remarkable In WNBA History’ – Ex-ESPN Star Details Why Caitlin Clark Has Her MVP Vote Over A’ja Wilson

Former ESPN star Linda Cohn addressed the WNBA MVP, sharing whether she'd vote for Caitlin Clark or A'ja Wilson.

The WNBA MVP race is heating up as the regular season reaches its final stretch. There are several candidates in the discussion, with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson leading many debates.

A former ESPN star recently revealed her current choice for WNBA MVP.

Linda Cohn Picks Caitlin Clark for Current WNBA MVP

The former ESPN star anchor shared why she believes Clark should be the MVP frontrunner over the other candidates.

While speaking to Yahoo Sports, Cohn said, “If I had a vote, I would vote for her because nobody touches the ball more than her. I saw a stat that was remarkable in WNBA history, she creates either with her assists or her scoring, 40 and a half points.”

Cohn continued, “The offense goes through her. Caitlin does so much. I know A’ja Wilson, she’s a machine, the stats are remarkable. It’s not most stats per player, it’s most valuable player.”

She cites Clark’s offensive gifts as the reason she should be named MVP. Clark ranks in the top five in scoring and assists, averaging 22.1 points and 8.3 assists per game, and she’s doing it while posting career-high shooting percentages from the field and from three, the most efficient season of her career.

However, critics of Cohn’s MVP choice will likely point to the career season Clark’s star backcourt teammate, Kelsey Mitchell, is having, which Cohn acknowledged as well. Mitchell is averaging 24.3 points per game while shooting a career-high 50.7% from the field.

Clark and Mitchell may cancel each other out in the WNBA MVP race because both stars argue for being the most valuable player on the Fever. In theory, that may open the door for someone else to win the award.

Critics of Cohn’s choice may also notice how she uses stats to validate Clark’s MVP-worthy season, while also invalidating Wilson’s candidacy. Wilson is leading the league in scoring at 26.1 points per game while shooting 51.9% from the field. Her three-point shooting and playmaking have also improved in recent seasons as she entered her prime.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle for Wilson is voter fatigue. The four-time league MVP is having her usual dominant season, as Cohn points out, which may cause voters to look for reasons to reward someone else.

That someone else could be Minnesota Lynx rookie point guard Olivia Miles, who is considered the primary reason the Lynx currently have the league’s best record at 30-7. Miles is averaging 19.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game, while shooting 49.7% from the field and 40 percent from three.

Cohn essentially dismissed Miles’ MVP candidacy because she’s a rookie; however, recent Hall of Fame inductee Candace Parker showed it’s possible to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season.

All of the league’s top stars will continue adding to their MVP cases during the regular season’s final chapter.
