Late in the first half on Thursday, Dallas Wings superstar Paige Bueckers and her Indiana Fever counterpart Caitlin Clark engaged in an intense exchange. Bueckers held Clark with both hands, but the referee initially refused to call a foul.
Bueckers kept her grip on Clark, who flailed in an effort to get the official’s attention before the whistle was finally blown. As the three-time All-Star fumed over the play, lip readers quickly focused on what Bueckers appeared to say to her opponent.
Amateur Lip Readers Decode Paige Bueckers’ 2-Word Message to Caitlin Clark During Tense Encounter
For much of the Fever-Wings clash, Bueckers and Clark matched up against each other. That happened again late in the second quarter, with Indiana trailing 42-40.
Clark was trying to milk the clock for the final shot. She separated herself from Bueckers after a screen from Fever forward Makayla Timpson. But with Dallas still having a foul to give before entering the penalty, Bueckers grabbed Indiana’s MVP contender to stop the play.
The referee didn’t call a foul on Bueckers right away, forcing her to keep holding. The whistle eventually came, but not before Clark lashed back and threw the ball.

Bueckers responded with a message to Clark, saying two words that caught the attention of amateur lip readers.
“Paige says ‘calm down,’ and she’s absolutely right. Caitlin Clark has been weird as [expletive] lately with all the shenanigans and flailing and shouting at refs,” an X user wrote.
“Paige Bueckers was trying to intentionally foul Caitlin Clark, but the refs didn’t wanna call it lol. She tells Caitlin to ‘calm down,'” a WNBA observer added.

Bueckers’ message seemed to make the right impact. Clark didn’t lose her composure on the next possession. The Fever guard inbounded the ball with the reigning Rookie of the Year watching closely, then calmly spotted Kelsey Mitchell cutting to the basket and delivered a perfectly timed pass. Mitchell scored to tie the game at 42-42 entering halftime.
However, the Wings ultimately had the last laugh. They outlasted Indiana 91-85, with Bueckers finishing with 13 points on 5-for-16 shooting, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Clark also struggled, scoring 10 points on 4-for-15 shooting, including 2-for-8 from 3-point distance, while adding 4 rebounds, 9 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.
