The Minnesota Vikings entrusted their offense to quarterback Carson Wentz while their injured starter, J.J. McCarthy, was out of action. The veteran quarterback did his best to keep the Vikings competitive in the games he played in during the 2025 NFL season.
Wentz, though, is now going to miss time himself, and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell will now hand over the keys back to McCarthy.
What’s Happened to Vikings QB Carson Wentz?
While McCarthy was healing from a high ankle injury, Wentz went out and truly gutted it out for Minnesota.
He actually played three games with a serious injury. But for the rest of this season, Wentz is going to be out of action himself. A report posted on X from NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero shed light on Wentz’s health situation at this time.
“Vikings QB Carson Wentz will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and miss the rest of the 2025 season, sources tell The Insiders,” Pelissero wrote. “Wentz gutted it out as long as he could. But he was in severe pain Thursday night in L.A. and now will get the shoulder fixed.”
With the image Pelissero used in his post, Wentz is seen in obvious pain and did the best he could while on the field. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport added some more context around Wentz’s injury.

“Details on Carson Wentz: In the first half of the London game, Wentz suffered a dislocation that tore his labrum and fractured the socket, per The Insiders,” Rapoport posted on X. “He gutted out 2.5 more games for the #Vikings with a big stabilizing brace, while JJ McCarthy (high-ankle) recovered.”
In the PFSN NFL Offense Impact metrics, the Vikings have a 64.5 Offense Impact Score, ranking 28th in the league, and grade out to a D+. In the PFSN NFL QB Impact metrics, Wentz had a 72.3 QB Impact Score and is ranked 24th QB in the league.
For the 2025 NFL season, Wentz finished with a 2-3 record as a starting QB. He had 1,216 yards passing with six touchdown passes and five interceptions, while completing 65.1% of his throws.
In his 10-year NFL career, besides the Vikings, Wentz has played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams, and Kansas City Chiefs. Wentz played most of his time with these teams as a starting quarterback, too.
