The New England Patriots created a hole at wide receiver when they moved on from Stefon Diggs. With cap space available and a young quarterback to support, the focus has stayed on finding a true difference-maker on the outside. Tyreek Hill remains unsigned, and his name continues to come up as a potential solution.
Why the Patriots Could Target Tyreek Hill in Free Agency
Hill still carries a résumé that stands out across the league. PFSN ranks him No. 18 among remaining free agents and the fourth-highest graded wide receiver still available, a mix of past production and current concerns that have slowed his market. PFSN NFL analyst Jacob Infante wrote:
“Stefon Diggs produced a strong season for the Patriots as their WR1, but the team released him to free up cap space,” Infante wrote. “With more than $42 million available, they have the flexibility to improve their roster in pursuit of another Super Bowl run. The Patriots signed Romeo Doubs in free agency, but he has primarily been a complementary receiver who never consistently took over games in Green Bay. Hill may not be a guaranteed No. 1 option at his age, but he would bring the highest ceiling to New England’s wide receiver group and has championship experience.”
Hill would bring a level of explosiveness that does not exist on the current roster.
Evaluating Hill’s Production and Injury Concerns
Across 10 seasons, Hill has totaled 819 receptions for 11,363 yards and 90 touchdowns, along with eight Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors. He led the league in receiving yards in 2023 and was tracking toward another 1,100-yard season in 2025 before suffering a season-ending injury. During his time in Miami, he consistently dictated coverages and forced defenses to account for him on every snap, opening opportunities for everyone else in the offense.
That injury is a major reason he is still available. A dislocated knee and torn ACL ended his season early, and with Hill now 32 years old, teams are weighing how much he has left. Off-field concerns have also followed him, adding another layer of hesitation.
There were signs of regression before the injury. Hill posted a 78.9 PFSN Wide Receiver Impact Score in 2024, ranking 35th among receivers, a noticeable drop from his earlier production. Even so, his speed and ability to stretch defenses remain rare traits.

New England needs a player who can change how defenses line up, especially with Drake Maye still developing. Hill may not be at his peak, but the ceiling he offers is higher than anything else currently available.
That makes this a situation worth watching as free agency continues. Hill is going to sign with a contender. It’s just a matter of which contender decides he is a fit.
