Craig revealed with his diagnosis that the concussions that he suffered while lighting it up for the 49ers on the gridiron likely contributed to his diagnosis. Despite that, Craig ended his speech in high spirits, expressing plenty of gratitude for his journey.

It’s a tough reality many athletes face. The injuries add up, especially to the head, which the doctors are saying could lead to diagnoses like Craig’s.

Craig won’t be defined by his dementia diagnosis. What he will be defined as is much simpler than another person suffering from vascular dementia. He is a 49ers legend, a three-time Super Bowl champion, and most importantly, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, forever.
