Christian Kirk Injury Update: What’s the Latest on the Texans WR, and Will He Play in Week 9?

In a promising turn for Houston’s offense, the Texans have issued an encouraging update on Christian Kirk’s Week 9 availability.

The Houston Texans pulled off a surprising win on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, made even more impressive by the absence of starting wide receivers Nico Collins and Christian Kirk.

Houston now sits at 3–4 on the season, and three of those losses have come without Kirk on the field. With another tough matchup looming against the Denver Broncos in Week 9, his availability could be crucial. Here’s the latest on his injury status.

Will Christian Kirk Play in Week 9?

Kirk, who was traded to the Texans this offseason, initially suffered a hamstring injury leading up to the Texans’ season opener. He missed the first two games, and while he did return in Week 3, his target share was limited. Over three games, he was targeted just 16 times.

After the Texans’ Week 6 bye, Kirk was absent when practices resumed. He returned to the field that Friday but re-aggravated the hamstring issue and missed Saturday’s session, ultimately being ruled out for the game. He did not practice at all during Week 8 and was ruled out again for Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers.

On Wednesday, however, Kirk returned to practice in a limited capacity, an encouraging sign for his Week 9 availability. If the 28-year-old can participate on both Thursday and Friday, he’ll likely be cleared to play against the Broncos.

Still, given his injury history and Houston’s receiver depth, the Texans are expected to approach his workload with caution. Hamstring flare-ups are notoriously tricky, and another setback could be costly.

Durability has been a recurring concern for Kirk in recent seasons. He managed just eight games in 2024 after suffering a broken collarbone and just 12 games in 2023 due to a core muscle injury (initially thought of as a groin injury).

Kirk has shown that he can shoulder a solid workload in the slot when healthy. In his last full season, which came for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022, he snagged 84 catches for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns.

Through three games this season, Kirk has managed just 10 receptions for 109 yards. In his absence, Nico Collins has emerged as the Texans’ top threat, posting 26 receptions for 339 yards and three touchdowns. Dalton Schultz and Xavier Hutchinson have contributed with 308 and 192 receiving yards, respectively, but the offense as a whole has struggled, ranking 19th in PFSN’s Offensive Impact metric.

Kirk’s return would be a significant boost as the Texans try to build off Sunday’s momentum at home. While the recurring hamstring issue is a legitimate concern, there is cautious optimism that he’ll be available for Week 9.
