Fans Seething As Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, Others Get Involved in US Open Mixed Doubles

Fans recently reacted to the teams participating in the mixed doubles event at the 2025 US Open. Top players such as Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, Casper Ruud, and defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori are among those competing in this event.

Earlier this year, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced a comprehensive reimagining of the mixed doubles event at the New York Major. The goal is to attract more top singles players to participate, thereby drawing larger crowds to the matches.

The US Open has recently revealed a lineup of pairings for the mixed doubles event, including Sinner and Emma Navarro, Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, and Djokovic and Olga Danilovic. The list also includes Świątek and Ruud, Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, among others.

The New York Major mixed doubles will take place on Aug. 19 and 20, 2025, during US Open Fan Week at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The winning pair will receive a million-dollar prize purse.

The USTA has announced the names of the teams that have entered the draw. They also confirmed that 16 teams have entered the draw. After the entry window closes, the top eight teams with the best combined singles rankings will be selected to compete, with some other pairs receiving wild card entries.

The matches in the US Open mixed doubles event will follow a new format. All matches leading up to the final will be best-of-three sets, with each set played to four games using no-ad scoring and tie-breaks at four-all. Instead of a third set, a Match Tie-break to 10 points will be played.

The final will consist of the best of three sets to six games, also employing no-ad scoring, tie-breaks at six-all, and a Match Tie-break to 10 points in place of a third set.

The completely reimagined mixed doubles event at the 2025 US Open and the lineup, primarily composed of top singles players rather than dedicated doubles specialists, did not resonate well with tennis fans.

Many fans took to social media to voice their concerns and disappointment regarding the new format. One fan expressed that the changes were “disrespectful” to players who specialize in mixed doubles.

“So much disrespectful to real double mixt players no word,” a fan posted.

Another fan described the new format as “ridiculous,” arguing that it undermines the careers and opportunities of the mixed doubles specialist players.

“This kinda ridiculous. Like maybe I’m that friend that’s too woke but you’re ruining doubles players careers and opportunities,” a fan posted.

“Disgusting omg if you think mixed doubles isn’t marketable it’s because you don’t promote the event like THIS,” a fan posted.

“Two others not pictured. ONE true specialists pair in defending champs Errani-Vavassori. There was a better way to do this AND still have your “star” studded field. Also would bet this is the most promotion ANY Slam has done for mixed doubles EVER. That’s a bigger problem,” a fan wrote.

“Sweet – you essentially turned this into an exhibition match instead of giving legitimate doubles players an opportunity….just kill the mixed doubles off and call it a star studded exhibition….” a fan posted.

What Did Defending Champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori Say About the Revamped US Open Mixed Doubles Format?

The new changes implemented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) regarding the mixed doubles event were not well received by the defending champions, Errani and Vavassori.

In a joint statement, the Italian duo expressed their discontent, asserting that making decisions solely based on profit motives is “profoundly wrong” in certain contexts.

“In our opinion, making decisions just following the logic of profit is profoundly wrong in some situations,” Errani and Vavassori wrote in their statement.

They mentioned that the decision to reimagine and revamp the mixed doubles event at the New York Major was made without any consultation, leaving them with no choice but to accept the outcome.

“We received the news that US Open mixed doubles tournament will be completely turned upside down, cancelled and replaced with a pseudo-exhibition focused only on entertainment and show. A decision made without consulting anyone, which we can do nothing but accept it,” they continued.

Errani and Vavassori characterized the new changes as unjust and disrespectful to an entire category of players.

“We see it as a profound injustice, that disrespect an entire category of players. Put money above tennis is never a good idea. We don’t know at the moment if we’ll have the chance to defend our title, but we hope this will remain an isolated case and this type of policy will not be considered again in the future,” Errani and Vavassori added.
