The Philadelphia Eagles have a problem with their passing game, and the blame must be shared among quarterback Jalen Hurts, head coach Nick Sirianni, and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.
After losing in the Wild Card Round, the Eagles made their move, ousting Patullo, who played a lesser role in Philadelphia’s recent Super Bowl teams. The Eagles are searching for an offensive coordinator, and given the impressive roster, it’s a bit of a surprise that the opening persists.
Philadelphia Eagles Could Land Surprising Offensive Coordinator
The major players in Philadelphia’s search for an offensive coordinator are still on the board, save for former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. If he doesn’t land a head coaching gig, he’ll head to Inglewood to call plays for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
It’s hard to blame him for taking a job without limitations under center. But with McDaniel off the board, the Eagles seem willing to hold an extensive search.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler provided an update on Philadelphia’s coaching search.
“Philly’s search has been all over the map, and the team is still submitting requests for interviews,” Fowler wrote. “I’m not totally convinced former Giants head coach Brian Daboll is off the table, though there’s not much buzz there at the moment.”
Daboll is currently a candidate to be the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills. There’s a chance he ends up calling plays for Robert Saleh and the Tennessee Titans, too.
Whoever ends up calling plays in Philadelphia will do so with the weight of championship expectations on their shoulders. Two of Hurts’ coordinators have parlayed Super Bowl appearances into head coaching gigs. Two others were fired amid dramatic collapses.
Fowler suggested that Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is a possibility.
“Chicago offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is a name to watch,” Fowler added. “The Bears did not block Philly’s request to interview Doyle, which means he’s free to make the lateral move. Some see him as head coach material, and this job can be a springboard if the new playcaller improves Hurts’ performance.”

Hurts’ 2025 season was a marked step back. He ranked 15th by PFSN’s NFL QB Impact Metric, and Philadelphia’s offense subsequently regressed, falling to 16th.
Doyle’s experience in Chicago, where the ground game fueled PFSN’s 10th-ranked offense in 2025, could help get the Eagles back on track. He also helped cultivate development from quarterback Caleb Williams and, most importantly, would bring new ideas to a room in desperate need of a refresh.
The Eagles’ offense grew stagnant in 2025, a result of Patullo’s limitations as a play-caller and the lesser parts of Hurts’ profile. Bringing elements of Chicago’s offense to Philadelphia could help revamp the unit, and capturing Doyle’s upward momentum would be a win for the Eagles.
While it’s a bit of a yellow flag that Chicago is allowing Doyle to explore lateral moves, he is well-regarded around the football world and has experience learning from two of the NFL’s best coaches in Johnson and Sean Payton. For a staff falling behind the times on passing downs, Doyle would provide the Philadelphia faithful with a reason for optimism in 2026.
