Former Eagles LB Argues Mike McDaniel Choosing Chargers Over Philadelphia Is ‘An Indictment on Jalen Hurts’

A former Eagles defender suggests Mike McDaniel choosing the Chargers over Philadelphia reflects deeper concerns about the offense.

The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason expecting a reset on offense after a disappointing year that fell far short of roster expectations. Instead, one of the most intriguing coordinator candidates came off the board and landed elsewhere.

Emmanuel Acho Questions Mike McDaniel’s Eagles Snub Highlights QB Concerns Behind Decision

That decision sparked a sharp reaction from former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho, who believes Mike McDaniel’s choice says more about the Eagles’ QB situation than the job opening itself.

Speaking on “Speakeasy,” Emmanuel Acho framed McDaniel’s move to the Los Angeles Chargers as a telling signal. In Acho’s view, the Eagles represent the clearest fast track for offensive coordinators seeking head coaching opportunities. Recent history backs that up.

Kellen Moore parlayed his Eagles OC stint into a head coaching job. Shane Steichen did the same. For an ambitious play-caller, the Eagles have functioned as a feeder system to the league’s top jobs.

That’s why Acho questioned why McDaniel would pass.

“Mike McDaniel taking the Chargers OC job, huge indictment on Jalen Hurts, because if you’re an offensive coordinator and you want to get a head coaching job instantaneously, the Eagles are the surest path,” Acho said. He pointed to the surrounding talent like Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and one of the league’s best tackle pairings in Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. He also noted the Eagles’ defense projects as a consistent top-five unit.

“So why the hell would you not want to go coach that team?” Acho said.

His conclusion was blunt. The only explanation he could deduce was uncertainty about the quarterback. “Unless the person that dictates your success as an offensive coordinator, you have questions about,” Acho added.

McDaniel’s landing spot adds context. Jim Harbaugh publicly said he wanted his next offensive coordinator to be the “head coach of the offense.” McDaniel fits that description. A former Dolphins head coach, he compiled a 35–33 record over four seasons in Miami, reached the playoffs twice, and earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s top offensive minds.

Under McDaniel, Miami led the league in total offense in 2023, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for an NFL-high 4,624 yards. The offense slipped in the past two seasons, contributing to McDaniel’s dismissal after a 7–10 campaign, but his schematic creativity remains highly regarded.

The interest from the Eagles was real. As reported by Zach Berman of The Athletic, McDaniel was seen internally as the Eagles’ top choice if he didn’t secure another head coaching or coordinator position. His knack for maximizing speed and efficiency caught the organization’s attention, even though there were some doubts about how his system would mesh with a dual-threat quarterback.

Ultimately, McDaniel opted for a Chargers team led by Justin Herbert and a promising young skill set, giving him a fresh start and complete control under Harbaugh. Acho’s comments do not accuse anyone directly. They frame a possibility. But they highlight a growing league perception that the Eagles’ offensive struggles and the quarterback’s role within them are under the microscope.

With McDaniel now off the table, the Eagles are looking at other candidates. The next hire will not only shape the offense but also impact how the league perceives the Eagles’ long-term strategy at the most crucial position.
