If the start of an NFL season usually feels like a door swinging open, 2026 feels more like a window thrown wide, letting in noise, light, and a breeze from somewhere halfway across the world. It begins where you’d expect, with reigning champion Seattle Seahawks arriving at their home field. Nevertheless, by the time the first kickoff breathes out, the league will have crossed oceans and flipped time zones.
What to Know About the Historic 49ers vs. Rams Game in Australia
The first snap of the 2026 season arrives on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 8:20 p.m. ET in Seattle, a small but meaningful shift from the usual Thursday night tradition, according to Adam Schefter. The Seahawks will raise their banner in front of their home crowd.
Their opponent is still a mystery, but the atmosphere won’t be. It’ll be loud in the way only opening night can be. Then, almost immediately, the league asks everyone to look elsewhere, far elsewhere.
Because while Thursday night football technically still exists, it won’t look the way fans are used to. The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will meet in Melbourne, Australia, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, according to another tweet by Schefter. The game is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. ET on Thursday, but in Melbourne, it will already be Friday morning at 10:35 a.m.

It will be a 14-hour time difference and a flight that stretches close to 16 hours, leaving bodies adjusting, clocks recalibrating, and routines rewritten.
Meanwhile, the decision to move the season opener to Wednesday wasn’t made on a whim. The calendar had other ideas, with Labor Day landing later than usual and the long-standing rules of the Sports Broadcasting Act limiting Friday and Saturday games.
The kickoff week seems like a balancing act. The Seahawks will still get their moment. But the 49ers and Rams get something else entirely: a place in history as the first teams to carry a regular-season game into Australia.
By the time Week 1 settles, the league will have done more than just start a season. It will have stretched itself across continents. Nine international games are planned for 2026, with new cities like Paris and Rio de Janeiro joining familiar hosts like London and Munich.
