Roger Craig is now officially a Hall of Famer in the Class of 2026.
The legendary running back played a major role in the San Francisco 49ers’ dynasty and helped the team win three Super Bowls. He also changed the position’s impact on the game. In 1985, he became the first player in NFL history to finish a season with 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards.
Yet, despite spending years in the spotlight, fans know far less about his life away from football.
Who Is Roger Craig’s Wife, Vernessia Craig?
Craig’s relationship with Vernessia began well before his NFL fame entered the picture.
The two met during their high school years and built a relationship that eventually became a lifelong partnership. On May 7, 1983, the high school sweethearts officially tied the knot.
The timing made the moment even more significant, as 1983 also marked the beginning of Craig’s legendary rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers.
From there, the couple started writing a new chapter together as his football career began taking shape. Throughout a demanding decade in the NFL, Vernessia remained part of the journey as Craig built a legacy that eventually earned him a place in Canton.
While Craig was busy establishing himself as a high-kneeling offensive pioneer and rewriting NFL history, Vernessia remained beside him through the biggest moments. That support was especially visible after the San Francisco 49ers captured Super Bowl XXIII.
In 1989, she famously joined her husband on Market Street as the team celebrated its championship with a victory parade.

Rather than chase the attention that came with Roger Craig’s NFL fame, he and Vernessia Craig chose a quieter life away from the spotlight.
The couple made their long-term home in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they could keep their family life grounded.
Together, they raised five children: daughters Damesha, Rometra, and Nia-Jai, along with sons Rogdrick and Alexander. Their home became the center of a family life that stayed largely separate from Roger’s public career.
Details about their children remain limited. The family has kept those parts of their lives private, leaving little publicly verified information about their ages, careers, or personal journeys.
That decision has allowed the Craig family to avoid much of the attention that often follows prominent NFL families. Now, after more than 40 years of marriage, Vernessia and their children have another reason to celebrate.
They can stand beside Roger as he reaches the pinnacle of his football legacy with his long-awaited Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement.
