Colts Star Sauce Gardner Sends 7-Word Message Recruiting LeBron James to Pacers After NBA Legend’s Surprise Lakers Exit

Indianapolis Colts star Sauce Gardner sent a message to LeBron James in efforts to make him sign with the Indiana Pacers in free agency.

LeBron James is leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and will play elsewhere for the 2026-27 season. The four-time NBA champion averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games last season, proving he still has plenty left to offer even as the Lakers build around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat have all emerged as potential landing spots, but Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner had a different idea.

Sauce Gardner Recruits LeBron James in Free Agency

Gardner took to X shortly after the news broke, posting a seven-word pitch to the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

“Lebron James…. welcome to the Indiana Pacers,” he wrote on X.

Gardner’s enthusiasm is understandable, as the two-time All-Pro cornerback has embraced Indianapolis since his trade from the New York Jets last year, and the idea of James joining the city’s NBA franchise would be a massive boost, both on and off the court.

The Lakers’ decision to move on from James was shaped by their investment in Doncic and Reaves, with the franchise re-signing the latter to a new max contract and building around a younger core. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James informed the Lakers about his decision before the free agency window opened out of courtesy.

However, as much as Gardner might want to see James suit up at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Indiana is arguably the worst fit among the realistic options. The Pacers are built around speed, youth, and Tyrese Haliburton’s playmaking.

Haliburton is expected to return from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, and Indiana’s identity runs through his ball-dominant, fast-paced style. Adding a 41-year-old who needs the ball in his hands to a system designed for transition offense doesn’t align with what the Pacers do best.

Golden State remains the most logical destination, as Draymond Green’s decision to decline his $27.7 million player option opened financial flexibility to pursue James. A roster built around Stephen Curry, Green, and James would feature three veterans with championship experience who understand how to maximize possessions in high-leverage moments.

The Warriors have also explored trading for Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards, though as of now, that deal looks unlikely.

Gardner’s recruiting pitch was worth an effort, but James’ next chapter is almost certainly heading to the Bay Area. It will be interesting to see whether Golden State can finalize a deal before the week is out, and whether they’ll also be able to land Davis.
