NFL Analyst Urges Rams to Draft Penn State’s Drew Allar As Successor to Matthew Stafford

The Los Angeles Rams could draft Penn State quarterback Drew Allar to serve as a low-pressure Matthew Stafford successor.

The Los Angeles Rams are getting closer to the point where they have to think seriously about life after Matthew Stafford. That does not mean the answer has to play right away. In fact, one analyst believes the best fit for Drew Allar would be a place where he does not have to.

Drew Allar Could Benefit From Sitting Behind Matthew Stafford

That is why Los Angeles is starting to make some sense. During an appearance on “Up and Adams,” analyst Matt Hamilton pointed to the Rams as a strong developmental landing spot for Allar.

“That’s a great place for him because I do think he’s a guy [who] will benefit from sitting a little bit,” Hamilton said. “You put him behind a Matthew Stafford. That’s a great spot for him because there is somebody who’s going to be intrigued by all that potential.”

That is really the appeal with Allar. The physical tools still draw people in, even after a college career that never quite matched the hype that surrounded him coming into the 2025 season.

At one point, Allar looked like a realistic contender to be the top quarterback in the 2026 class. Instead, his final year at Penn State went sideways, and a broken ankle in October ended his season early. That changed the conversation around him and pushed him into a very different kind of draft range.

Now, he feels much more like a developmental swing than a quarterback a team is counting on right away.

Allar Still Has Traits That Could Interest the Rams

Los Angeles is one of the few teams in the league where a young quarterback could land without the pressure of needing to play immediately.

Stafford is still in place, head coach Sean McVay has a strong track record of building around quarterback strengths, and the offense’s structure would give a project like Allar a real chance to sit and develop.

There is still plenty to work with physically. Allar has prototypical size, arm strength, and enough movement ability to keep teams interested, which is why he remains a name to watch despite the inconsistency.

He also helped himself at Penn State’s Pro Day, where he looked healthy again after the ankle injury and reminded teams why he was viewed so highly not that long ago.

The concerns are still real. Todd McShay recently questioned Allar’s accuracy and called it a major issue in his evaluation. But that is also why a team like the Rams could make sense.

They would not need him to be ready right away. They would be betting on traits, patience, and a situation that gives him time to figure it out. And for a quarterback like Allar, that may be the best thing that could happen.
