Christian Wilkins signed the biggest contract of his career just one year ago, expecting to anchor Las Vegas’ defense for years to come. Instead, he’s cleaning out his locker after one of the messiest breakups in recent NFL history. The Raiders cut the star defensive tackle Thursday following a bitter dispute over his foot injury recovery, instantly transforming an $110 million investment into a costly mistake.
Why Did the Raiders Release Christian Wilkins After One Season?
Wilkins was expected to be the cornerstone of the Raiders’ defensive line for years after signing a massive four-year, $110 million contract with the team in 2024. However, his time in Las Vegas is now abruptly over, despite playing in only five games during the 2024-25 season and recording 17 tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for loss.
The breaking point came over a fundamental disagreement about medical treatment. According to multiple reports, including from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Raiders strongly urged Wilkins to undergo surgery to repair his injured foot, but the defensive tackle declined. That decision triggered concerns within the organization about whether he was following proper medical protocols outlined in his contract.

Last month, the organization voided the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed funds from his contract, alleging Wilkins had violated terms related to his injury rehabilitation. The Raiders designated him as a terminated vested veteran with Thursday’s official release.

What Does Wilkins’ Grievance Mean for His Guaranteed Money?
Wilkins and his representatives aren’t accepting the Raiders’ decision quietly. On Thursday, Wilkins officially filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), challenging the team’s decision to void his guaranteed money.
NFL insider Ari Meirov provided insight into the escalating tension between both sides, explaining the core of the dispute.

“Essentially, the Raiders are releasing him and taking away all of his guaranteed money… The argument the Raiders are making is based on the way he has been recovering from this foot injury. Something must have happened away from the facility,” Meirov explained.
“If you read the finer details inside of a contract, there are a number of ways to void it. The Raiders believe he has done that. Wilkins and his camp believe it’s not true.”
The situation represents a devastating turn for Wilkins at what should have been the peak of his career. After establishing himself as a defensive force with the Miami Dolphins, he was among the most sought-after players available when he hit free agency following the 2023-24 season. The Las Vegas deal was supposed to be his big step forward, but instead, it ended in a complete breakdown.
An arbitrator will ultimately determine whether Wilkins is entitled to any of the $35.2 million the Raiders withheld from his contract during a grievance process that could take weeks or months. Both sides remain entrenched in their positions, and what began as a promising partnership has deteriorated into one of the most contentious player-team disputes in recent NFL history.
