There is no question that Adam Vinatieri is one of the best kickers in NFL history. The four-time Super Bowl champion was a key piece for both the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts across his storied 24-year career.
Now that he is being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, here is a closer look at the other kickers already enshrined in Canton.
Adam Vinatieri Joins Exclusive Group of Kickers in Hall of Fame
Prior to Vinatieri’s induction, only four kickers had been voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: George Blanda (who also played quarterback), Lou Groza (who also played tackle), Jan Stenerud and Morten Andersen. Now, Vinatieri joins their ranks.
The only position with fewer Hall of Famers is punter, with Ray Guy being the lone specialist enshrined at the position. Meanwhile, Vinatieri is the first kicker to be inducted since Andersen in 2017, ending a nine-year drought for primary placekicker enshrinements.
There is no debating that Vinatieri has earned his bronze bust in Canton. He still holds the NFL record for most career field goals made (599). Vinatieri was not just a regular-season player. He also delivered during the game’s biggest moments in the postseason.
Of all the successful attempts, his 45-yard field goal through a snowstorm with 27 seconds remaining in the 2001 AFC Divisional Round against the Oakland Raiders remains one of the most remarkable kicks in NFL history.

Unfortunately, after no NFL team signed Vinatieri coming out of college, he took his talent to the now-defunct World League of American Football (WLAF). He played 10 games for the Amsterdam Admirals, where he handled both kicking and punting duties.

Following that stint, Vinatieri landed an opportunity with Bill Parcells’ Patriots, beating out 17-year veteran Matt Bahr to secure the Patriots’ kicking job. The rest is history.
Vinatieri is the NFL’s all-time leading scorer with 2,673 points, edging out Andersen (2,544). He also ranks second in career extra points made (874) behind Blanda (943) and holds the most Super Bowl wins by any kicker in league history. He won three titles with New England and one with Indianapolis.
Vinatieri retired as the only player in league history to score at least 1,000 points with two different franchises. His Hall of Fame career spanned 10 seasons in New England, followed by another 14 years in Indianapolis.
After his induction, Vinatieri will serve as the flag bearer for all NFL kickers, a remarkable feat for an undrafted player out of South Dakota State who made it to the NFL in 1996.
