Raiders HC Pete Carroll Provides Update on Geno Smith

The assumption is that Smith would get a long-term extension from the Raiders. He had been asking for $50 million per year from the Seahawks, which was too rich for Seattle’s blood. The 2013 third-rounder out of West Virginia is now back at the negotiating table.

Las Vegas general manager John Spytek recently expressed confidence that a deal would get done soon. He wouldn’t get into details, per The Athletic’s Tashan Reed. Head coach Pete Carroll confirmed contract talks were ongoing when he addressed the media at the NFL Annual League Meeting in Florida.

“We’re working on it,” Carroll told reporters, via NFL Media’s Kevin Patra. “Yeah, we’re working on it. [Smith’s] excited to get going, get started. He’ll be here when we get rolling. But we are working on it.”

Dak Prescott is the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, earning an estimated $60 million per year. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Smith is expected to earn between $40 and $45 million.

Smith still has one year remaining on the three-year, $75 million deal he inked in 2023.

Seahawks Attempted to Extend Geno Smith: ‘Prepared to Pivot’

Seahawks general manager John Schneider reportedly made an offer similar to what the Rams gave Matthew Stafford, including $40 million for the contract’s first year. That offer wasn’t good enough.

“We made an offer to Geno. We tried to extend him,” Schneider told ESPN’s Brady Henderson. “It became apparent that we weren’t going to be able to get a deal done. It wasn’t like a very long negotiation and so, as a staff, we had to be prepared to pivot.”

Seattle’s pivot was inking Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract. Darnold is seven years younger than Smith and is coming off his first Pro Bowl season after throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns (12 interceptions) in 2024 for the Minnesota Vikings.
