Patriots Predicted To Sign 10-TD WR in Free Agency As Stefon Diggs’ Replacement

Patriots eye Wan'Dale Robinson after releasing Stefon Diggs, seeking WR help to boost Drake Maye and sustain Super Bowl contention

The New England Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl appearance, the first with franchise quarterback Drake Maye under center, and are already looking to ensure that success continues. In a move to create significant cap space, New England released veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs this past week and is now expected to explore free agency for offensive reinforcements.

Patriots Predicted to Target Wide Receiver Coming Off Career Year

Despite finishing second in PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric during the regular season, the Patriots’ offense struggled to find a rhythm in the Super Bowl. While the defense kept the game within reach, the offense lacked consistency throughout the night.

Offensive line issues and blocking breakdowns were major factors, but the wide receivers also struggled to create separation. Even if Maye had more time in the pocket, his options were limited. Because of that, New England was already expected to look for help at receiver, even before parting ways with Diggs.

With the veteran now gone, the need has only intensified, and according to PFSN’s Jacob Infante, the Patriots could target Wan’Dale Robinson in free agency.

“Malik Nabers suffered a season-ending injury four games into 2025, creating an opportunity for Wan’Dale Robinson to step into the Giants’ WR1 role,” Infante wrote. “It’s a role he thrived in, tallying a career-high 1,014 receiving yards on 92 catches. He averaged double-digit yards per reception for the first time in his NFL career, too.

“Robinson’s impressive 3.2% drop rate speaks to the steadiness of his hands. New York used him heavily in the short passing game under Brian Daboll, though his role expanded a little down the field in 2025. He’s not quite in WR1 territory because of his one-dimensional game, but he’s one of the more consistent complementary weapons you can get.”

Originally selected 43rd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Robinson has steadily improved each season, going from 227 receiving yards as a rookie to surpassing the 1,000-yard mark last year. However, he has scored just 10 touchdowns across four seasons, reinforcing the idea that he profiles more as a complementary weapon than a true WR1.

While pairing Robinson with Diggs could have created a balanced receiving duo, New England now lacks a clear top target. Because of that, the Patriots may prioritize adding a true No. 1 receiver first, with A.J. Brown and Alec Pierce among the names linked as potential WR1 options.

In PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, Robinson ranked 35th overall despite finishing seventh in total receptions. His ability to thrive in the slot and produce consistently makes him an appealing addition. If the Patriots can pair him with a true top receiver, it could provide the offensive boost needed to support Maye and keep New England among the league’s contenders.
