Every year, the Kansas City Chiefs are among the Super Bowl favorites in the NFL due to their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Even with roster building that may be questionable at times, injuries in position groups, or other issues that may stop this team from succeeding, Mahomes can lead them to wins.
After losing the Super Bowl in the 2024/25 season, the Chiefs had momentum to get back in and win it again, but that’s not what happened. The team struggled for most of the season, but things got even worse when their star quarterback went down.
Patrick Mahomes Gives Injury Rehab Update
In December, against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes suffered a major knee injury that knocked him out for the season. To this point, the Chiefs had 6 wins and 7 losses, so it was already not the season anyone expected. Mahomes was ranked 17th in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric, which was the worst in his career so far. Still, the Chiefs could have made the playoffs, well, until the injury.
Once Mahomes went down, the Chiefs were exponentially worse. They ended the season on a 4-game losing streak (including the loss to the Chargers), and for the first time since selecting Mahomes in 2017, were set to pick in the top 10 of the NFL Draft.
With Mahomes’ injury so late in the season and so devastating, the rehab was going to be extensive and potentially bleed into the regular season. This would be very disappointing news for the Chiefs and their fans, but after trading for former New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields and selecting LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, this outcome was likely.

Still, with modern medicine and rehab practices, players have been able to return from horrible injuries in record time. There have been recent rumors that Mahomes may be able to be ready for week 1, and in a recent interview with GQ, Mahomes was asked about how his rehab is going:
“It’s going good,” Mahomes said. “I’m almost seven months out now. It’s a lot of work, but I’ve gotten used to it now. Now it’s just being consistent and doing it every day. And it helps having people that I like who are pushing me to do that. My trainers in the facility, outside of the facility, and then my family supporting me. I’m trying to be ready to go with one, so I can stay on top of it.”

From what Mahomes told GQ, the rehab has been hard work, but it seems to be moving in the right direction. There was no declaration that the star QB will be ready for Week 1, and Mahomes may not want to say that yet, since we are still more than two month away.
Time will tell if Mahomes is ready to suit up for Week 1, but it’s clear that the Chiefs QB is doing everything he can to make it happen.
