Jayden Daniels’ LSU legacy has taken an unexpected turn after a dispute over his former No. 5 jersey. The Washington Commanders quarterback has tried to separate himself from the controversy while his representatives handle the business side.
Now, a former LSU star and Super Bowl champion has offered Daniels some straightforward advice.

Leonard Fournette does not appear interested in picking sides in the Daniels-LSU dispute. The former NFL running back and Super Bowl champion believes the quarterback should accept that LSU’s jersey numbers will eventually belong to other players.
“Jayden, listen, bro, just let it go,” Fournette said on the “4th And South” podcast. “Just let it go.”
Fournette’s comments came as Daniels’ representatives continue to challenge LSU’s use of the quarterback’s name, image, and likeness (NIL) following the decision to give No. 5 to defensive back DJ Pickett.

Fournette’s argument goes beyond Daniels’ specific situation. He pointed to LSU’s history of passing iconic numbers from one star to another and stressed that the program itself must remain bigger than its players.
“No player is bigger than the brand,” Fournette added. “No player is bigger than the LSU brand.”

He used his own experience with No. 7 to explain his position. Fournette remembered that LSU had previously left the number unused after Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson wore it. When Fournette arrived as a highly regarded recruit, the Tigers ultimately gave him the number.
“Before I got to LSU, Tyrann and Pat Pete, No. 7 wasn’t worn for two years,” Fournette said. “I was the right recruit that wanted the number, and also I’m from the Seven Ward, so it represents my hood and my neighborhood, where I’m from, and they gave it to me.”

This history helps explain why Fournette sees the current No. 5 dispute differently. Daniels wore the number during his historic LSU run, but the jersey was never officially retired. LSU later gave it to Pickett, reportedly after the defensive back had been promised the number during his recruitment.
Meanwhile, Daniels’ representatives have responded with a cease-and-desist letter concerning LSU’s use of his NIL. The dispute has since become a larger conversation about how college programs handle the names and legacies of former stars.
Daniels, who ranked 27th on PFN NFL QB Impact Rankings despite his injury-shortened season, has himself attempted to keep his distance from the public fight. “I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus,” he said. “I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there.”
The Commanders quarterback also made his preferred path forward clear. “Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately,” Daniels said. “My sole personal focus is on Commanders’ football.”
He added, “I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved.”
That puts Daniels’ own approach closer to stepping away from the noise than escalating it. Fournette’s message simply takes that idea further, arguing that LSU’s identity should not depend on keeping a particular number attached to one player forever.
For Daniels, the priority going forward is to leave the LSU dispute with his representatives and put his attention back on Washington.
