‘The Holdup Is Pretty Simple’ — Giants Insider Reveals Why Odell Beckham Jr. Hasn’t Signed With New York

Odell Beckham Jr.'s potential return to the New York Giants hinges on whether his updated playing style fits the new offense.

The idea of an Odell Beckham Jr. reunion has been simmering in New York for a few years. Now, it feels closer to reality than ever. The Giants brought him in for a workout and physical just before the draft.

But despite the momentum, nothing has been done so far. And the reason has more to do with making sure this doesn’t turn into a feel-good move that ages badly for either side.

The Giants Are Being Cautious With an Odell Beckham Jr. Reunion

Giants insider Art Stapleton shared the energy that’s coming out of the building:

“The holdup on Odell is pretty simple. They have to be sure they both want to do this weighing all the factors: I have no doubt Odell wants to be a Giant. I think Harbaugh would like to coach him and thinks he can bring something to this team and the WR group,” Stapleton wrote on X.

However, despite the mutual respect between the two parties, Stapleton highlights the different layers of the situation.

“In some ways, it’s like why some Yankees fans don’t want Don Mattingly to ever manage the Yankees,” Stapleton continued. “Because one day, he’ll be fired. And no one wants to see Donnie Baseball fired. With OBJ, he’s incredibly popular with a lot of Giants fans. Harbaugh and team brass don’t want this to be for show or for nostalgia. Neither does Odell.”

“If you bring OBJ back and he comes back, you want the storybook ending,” Stapleton added. “He contributes. Helps Dart. Stays healthy. Closes the circle on his career and goes out a Giant. Can they find a way to maximize their chances of making that happen for both sides?”

This is not to question Beckham’s abilities. At least, not yet. It’s about whether this version of Beckham fits what the Giants are building and whether that fit holds over a full season.

They used the No. 74 pick on Malachi Fields, adding size and upside to the receiver room. Pairing a young target like Fields with a veteran presence like Beckham could help stabilize things for quarterback Jaxson Dart heading into 2026.

After all, the Giants are coming off a season in which their offense ranked No. 24 in PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric (70.7). There’s a need for production, not just leadership or name value.

And beyond the emotional pull, OBJ’s recent production is far from what the new head coach, John Harbaugh, needs. Across his post-Giants seasons, he finished outside the top 40 in PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact rankings multiple times, including a No. 39 finish in 2019. (*These metrics cover just three seasons: 2019, 2021, and 2023.*)

The explosiveness that defined his early years hasn’t consistently shown up over a full campaign. Still, the physicality is there. Coach Harbaugh acknowledged as much after the private workout.

“Odell and I are going to talk and kind of see where he is at, see where we’re at, see what he’s thinking,” Harbaugh said. “I think if we do anything, just being honest about it. You know, it has to make sense for the Giants. It has to make sense for him. He’s in a different place in his career, for sure.”

He followed that with a more direct evaluation:

“He still thinks he has some juice, and he looked good in the workout. You still got to be able to play. It’s not going to be the old Odell. It’s going to be a different version, the 2.0 Odell I guess you would say.”

The Giants aren’t chasing the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year version of Beckham. They’re evaluating whether the current version can contribute to a developing offense.

And it brings everything back to Stapleton’s point. Both sides know what this reunion means.
