His fiery approach led to a few heated exchanges with teammates, prompting former Pro Bowl receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh to offer him a reality check.

Wednesday’s training camp took a hard left for the Bengals as Chase found himself at the center of an on-field altercation. He got into a brief confrontation with cornerback DJ Turner II, confronting him before removing and tossing his helmet as teammates stepped in to separate the two.
Chase continued exchanging words with members of the Bengals’ defense, including Jalen Davis. The exact cause of the incident remains unclear, but following practice, Turner ensured that it was just “competition” and didn’t snowball into “anything major.”
Turner also said that training camp is an important time for the defense to develop chemistry and establish its identity, but Houshmandzadeh believed Chase should have handled it with more composure.
“I met with him after practice, or I’m meeting with him first thing in the morning, and I’m gonna say, ‘Hey, you know we need you,” Houshmandzadeh said on the Speakeasy podcast on Wednesday. “This is training camp, emotions are going to run high, but I need you to keep your composure. We can’t win games without you.

“So if this happens in a game, we lose you for the game. We probably lose that game. So I need you to keep your composure for the team more than anything else.”

Houshmandzadeh isn’t wrong about Chase’s importance as the Bengals have built their offense around the receiver, and he has proved worthy of that every single season. He recorded 125 receptions for 1,412 receiving yards and added eight touchdowns last season.
Chase also earned the No. 5 spot in the PFN WR Impact metrics, a major achievement considering he maintained high efficiency despite quarterback turnover when Joe Burrow missed games due to injury.
Burrow also weighed in on the incident after practice, joking that if a player can “punch somebody in the face” and still be lined up for the next snap within 15 to 20 seconds, that’s the ideal outcome.
However, Houshmandzadeh focused on the broader message rather than the isolated incident.
“Again, I don’t know Jamar’s personality,” Houshmandzadeh added. “I know him, I don’t know him like that. Can I get on him in front of a team? And if I can, I am. But I’m also a realist. I’ve been in that locker room where you get on the wrong player, he’s gonna really let everybody know who’s running things around here.”
The practice scuffle indeed generated headlines, but Chase also received welcome news this week, as EA Sports announced him as one of six players selected to the prestigious Madden NFL 27 “99 Club.”
