As the hockey world turns its attention to the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, one name continues to dominate the conversation: Connor McDavid. And if you ask his Edmonton Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl about it, none of this comes as a surprise.
Leon Draisaitl Weighs In on Connor McDavid’s Olympic Dominance
McDavid has been nothing short of spectacular for Team Canada. Through just three games, the Oilers captain has racked up 9 points, 2 goals, and 7 assists, leading the entire tournament in scoring by a three-point margin.
He exploded for 6 points in Canada’s commanding 5-0 and 5-1 wins over Czechia and Switzerland, then followed it up with a goal and two assists in a 10-2 rout of France. In doing so, McDavid became the first player in NHL-Olympic history to record three consecutive three-point games. He also set a new record for the most points ever by a Canadian NHL player in a single Olympic tournament.
And he’s not done yet. McDavid now sits just two points shy of tying Teemu Selanne’s single-tournament Olympic record of 11.
After Germany’s 5-1 loss to Team USA on Sunday, Draisaitl was asked about his teammate’s incredible run. “It’s impressive. I’m not surprised,” Draisaitl said. “The team’s obviously feeling it and looking really good and playing well so, yeah, excited for him.”
Carrying the Load Again
Canada finished atop Group A with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring opponents 20-3. By securing the No. 1 overall seed, they earned a direct bye to the quarterfinals.
McDavid’s fingerprints are all over that success. His nine points account for nearly half of Canada’s total offense so far, an incredible feat considering he’s sharing the ice with some of the best players in the world.

It’s a familiar story. Back in the NHL, McDavid is also leading the league in scoring with 96 points. Those points represent nearly 50 percent of the Oilers’ 198 goals this season, a staggering level of impact for one player.
Draisaitl’s Focus Shifts to Germany
While McDavid and Canada await their quarterfinal opponent, Draisaitl’s attention remains on Germany. His team finished third in Group C with a 1-2-0 record, earning the No. 6 seed for the knockout stage. Germany will face France in the qualification playoff round on February 17, with a quarterfinal berth at stake.
Draisaitl has quietly put together a solid tournament of his own, posting 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) in three games.

If both teams continue to advance, a Canada-Germany showdown would add another compelling chapter to the McDavid-Draisaitl storyline. This time on the Olympic stage.
