In another dominant display of its winning ways in Italy, Team USA trounced Germany 5-1 to advance to the quarterfinals at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. If the defeat itself was not enough for Team Germany’s captain, Leon Draisaitl, Matthew Tkachuk added insult to injury with a sharp jab that is bound to cut deep.
The episode has already gained traction on social media, and if fans were expecting an elaborate response from Draisaitl condemning Tkachuk, they will be thoroughly left disappointed.
Leon Draisaitl Shares Solemn Response to Matthew Tkachuk’s Pointed Dig
Germany’s Olympic campaign at Milan-Cortina has now met its second consecutive defeat. For all of Draisaitl and Tim Stützle’s exploits, they ultimately fell short in front of Auston Matthews and company at the Milano Santigiulia IHO Arena. Disappointment hung heavy in the air as it was, and then along came Tkachuk to rub salt into Draisaitl’s wounds.
Tkachuk’s histrionics have earned him quite a reputation on and off the ice. After snatching the 5-1 victory, he fired a shot at Draisaitl. Implying that the 30-year-old Cologne native always falls short at the final hurdle, Tkachuk remarked, “Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” Luckily for us, a hot mic caught Tkachuk’s words crystal clear.
Draisaitl’s reaction to Tkachuk’s brash talk is, by all means, woefully underwhelming for those who were expecting fireworks.
When a reporter asked Draisaitl if he had something to say about Tkachuk’s cruel jab, Draisaitl simply said, “No.” When the reporter further pressed the Edmonton Oilers star on if the whole episode was just the same old loud-mouthed arrogance of Tkachuk that the league has witnessed before, the 30-year-old simply nodded in agreement.
Draisaitl’s measured response is in stark contrast to Tkachuk’s. However, despite his few words about the incident, Team Germany’s captain had made it clear back in 2020 that he is no fan of Tkachuk.

“I would probably get off the ice,” Draisaitl bluntly stated at the prospect of sharing the ice for 3-on-3 during the All-Star Game with Tkachuk, then a part of the Calgary Flames.
While Tkachuk’s prowess as an ice hockey player and his ability to get under his opponents’ skin have been established beyond any doubt, his reputation is patchy. According to a players’ poll by The Athletic that hilariously ranked the NHL’s most punchable stars, Tkachuk came in third behind Nick Cousins and Florida Panthers teammate, Brad Marchand.
