‘Odds Are Extremely Slim’ — Canadiens Insider Dishes on Montreal’s Chances of Landing 3-Time Stanley Cup Champion

Following a surprising and impressive run to the Eastern Conference Final, the Montreal Canadiens enter the offseason looking to build on their momentum. General manager Kent Hughes is expected to be active in the market as he searches for ways to strengthen a young roster that suddenly appears ready to compete.

Amid that search, a three-time Stanley Cup champion has emerged as a fascinating, if unlikely, target.

Canadiens’ Odds of Landing Cup Champion Revealed

Detroit Red Wings winger Patrick Kane has become one of the more intriguing names to watch ahead of free agency. He is set to hit the open market on July 1 after completing a one-year, $3 million contract with Detroit.

Kane’s future has become a hot topic largely because of the uncertainty surrounding the Red Wings. Reports that captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade have created questions about the organization’s direction and whether veteran players like Kane still fit into the team’s long-term plans.

That uncertainty led Canadiens insider Marc-Olivier Beaudoin to dream up a potential fit in Montreal. “I know the odds of this happening are extremely slim (especially considering he’s American), but holy moly, I’d love to see Patrick Kane, my favorite player for ages, land in Montreal for a season and play on a line with Ivan Demidov. Even if he’s getting older and isn’t the player he once was. It would be spectacular as hell!” Beaudoin said.

For Beaudoin, the appeal goes beyond adding a decorated veteran to the lineup.

The Canadiens view Ivan Demidov as one of the franchise’s most important building blocks, and his playmaking ability has often drawn comparisons to a young Kane. Having the 37-year-old winger spend a season alongside Demidov could provide invaluable mentorship to the young star.

Of course, Beaudoin also acknowledged the reality of the situation.

Kane has spent his career in major American markets such as Chicago, New York, and Detroit, while remaining relatively close to his hometown of Buffalo. At this stage of his career, choosing the intense spotlight that comes with playing in Montreal would be a surprising decision.

Still, it’s not impossible to imagine Hughes exploring the idea.

After posting 57 points in 67 games last season, Kane proved he can still be a productive top-six forward and power-play contributor. If Montreal were to pursue him, a one-year contract in the $4.5 million to $5.5 million range could make sense, potentially supplemented by performance bonuses available to players over 35.

The challenge, however, is that Kane would likely attract significant interest from contenders across the league if he reaches free agency.

And despite the speculation, Detroit remains motivated to keep him. Among the Red Wings’ pending unrestricted free agents, Kane is widely viewed as the veteran the organization most wants to retain.

For now, a move to Montreal remains more wishful thinking than a realistic expectation. But if Kane does decide to test the market, the Canadiens could at least be one team worth watching.
