With Connor McDavid’s Contract On Razor’s Edge, Insider Peels Back The Curtain on Negotiations With Oilers Brass

The Oilers’ front office and Connor McDavid are keeping things steady, but the captain’s next move may depend entirely on how this season goes.

Connor McDavid has spoken openly about loving life in Edmonton and his desire to win there. At the same time, he has admitted he’s in no rush to sign his next contract. The decision, he’s said, is too important to make hastily. For the Oilers, it means opening training camp with their franchise cornerstone holding all the leverage.

How Long Will Oilers Fans Wait for Connor McDavid’s Contract Answer?

NHL insider Chris Johnston offered some clarity during The “Chris Johnston Show.” He explained that conversations between McDavid’s camp, led by agent John Moldaver, Oilers president Jeff Jackson, and general manager Stan Bowman have been steady and respectful.

“It sounds like they’re talking a lot. Not necessarily about contract specifics, but everything’s out in the open,” Johnston said. Johnston added that Edmonton’s front office seems content to let McDavid dictate the pace.

He said, “It’s pretty rosy… The Oilers front office rightly is giving Connor some space. They’re waiting for that call or that that knock on the office door one day.” They know this won’t be resolved overnight, and no one expects him to rush a decision. In Johnston’s words, “I think it could still be some time.”

That approach matches McDavid’s public stance. In interviews and podcasts, he has repeated that the 2025-26 season is his sole focus. The long-term call, he’s hinted, will depend on how the year unfolds.

A Season That Could Shape McDavid’s Future

The Oilers have come painfully close in recent seasons, reaching two straight Stanley Cup Finals only to fall to Florida. For McDavid, winning remains the one standard that matters most.

He’s said before that contract length or dollars aren’t the issue; the real question is whether Edmonton can keep him in the best position to compete for championships year after year.

That makes his situation different from most NHL stars. McDavid has already signed one massive contract and will earn another whenever he chooses. His next step, though, isn’t about maximizing money. It’s about trust in the Oilers’ path to winning.

The front office knows it too. Every roster decision this year, from depth signings to potential trade-deadline moves, could weigh heavily on their captain’s thinking.

Leon Draisaitl, McDavid’s longtime linemate, addressed the uncertainty on “32 Thoughts: The Podcast.” He admitted he hopes McDavid re-signs but stressed it’s a personal choice. “If it doesn’t [get done], then that’s his right and his decision,” Draisaitl said, adding that the team respects the process and doesn’t see it as a distraction inside the room.

Oilers fans will have to live with the uncertainty for now, holding out hope that this year finally brings the breakthrough McDavid has been chasing. Until then, every game feels like it carries more weight, as both the season and the future of the franchise hang in the balance.
