Few markets react to coaching hires quite like Toronto. One decision can trigger optimism, skepticism, and endless debate before a single game is played. That’s exactly where the Maple Leafs find themselves after handing the bench to Jim Hiller, a coach tasked with helping a proud franchise recover from a disappointing season.
As excitement builds around the new direction, Stanley Cup-winning coach Barry Trotz is urging fans to focus on what comes next rather than what just happened.
Barry Trotz Explains Why Maple Leafs Fans Should Feel Optimistic About Jim Hiller
Trotz believes Toronto fans have good reason to be excited about Hiller’s arrival behind the Maple Leafs bench.
During an appearance on Leafs Morning Take, Trotz was asked what message he would send directly to Leafs fans following Hiller’s hiring. Having worked closely with Hiller during their time with the New York Islanders, Trotz offered a detailed look at the qualities that helped the 57-year-old earn one of hockey’s most scrutinized jobs.
“I think that you have a progressive thinker in that Jim is one who has always learned,” Trotz said
This willingness to adapt stood out to Trotz. He described Hiller as a coach who continues to evolve with the game rather than relying on old methods. In a league where systems, analytics, and player management are constantly changing, Trotz sees that trait as a major strength.
He also pointed to the roster Hiller is inheriting. Despite last season’s struggles, Toronto still features a talented core and several young players who could play important roles moving forward.
“Be excited about the potential,” Trotz said. “You’ve got some really good core players there. You’ve got some good young players.”
While Trotz praised the hire, he also delivered a reality check to a fan base known for riding every high and low. He acknowledged the passion surrounding the franchise but stressed that meaningful progress rarely happens overnight.
“I think it’s okay to embrace the change,” Trotz said. “Leafs Nation, I would just say keep everything in perspective. I think one thing in that market sometimes is that the patience level is zero at times. I just think sometimes, and this is me from afar, when you win a couple of games, all of a sudden you feel like you can win a Stanley Cup right there. And sometimes it’s not in perspective because we are excited and we’re passionate about our teams.”
The numbers suggest Hiller brings more than just fresh ideas.
According to Sportsnet Stats, the Los Angeles Kings ranked 1st in the NHL in goals against per game at 2.60 during his tenure. They also finished 1st in 5-on-5 goals against and 3rd in 5-on-5 goals-for percentage, showing an ability to control games at even strength.
These results likely played a major role in John Chayka’s decision to make Hiller the 41st head coach in franchise history. The new general manager has already begun reshaping the roster, starting with the acquisition of Darren Raddysh, as part of a broader effort to change Toronto’s identity.
ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski connected those moves in a post on X, writing, “Between Hiller and Raddysh, clearly the Maple Leafs think that the power play (21.3% last season) is one path back from the abyss.”

For now, Trotz believes the focus should remain on possibility rather than pressure. His message was simple: Toronto hired a coach with fresh ideas, a strong track record, and a reputation for learning. The next challenge is giving him the time to put those qualities to work.
