Oilers Boss Refuses To Indulge Worst-Case Scenario in Connor McDavid Saga

The Oilers captain hasn’t committed to a new deal, but Edmonton’s GM says the team is focused on winning, not hypotheticals about his future.

The buzz in Edmonton isn’t about the first drills or roster battles. It’s about what the future holds for the Oilers’ best player. Connor McDavid, captain and face of the franchise, arrived for the 2024-25 campaign with his contract status hanging over everything.

In a city used to watching him dazzle, even the front office can’t escape the uncertainty– will McDavid sign, or is this the start of a new era in Edmonton?

How Long Can the Edmonton Oilers Wait for Connor McDavid’s Answer?

The Edmonton Oilers opened training camp, but all anyone can talk about is their captain’s contract. Connor McDavid, 28, is heading into the final season of his eight-year, $100 million deal, and nobody around the organization seems immune to the speculation swirling around him.

Even Stan Bowman, general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations, has had to address questions, bat down scenarios, and stress patience as McDavid takes his time with the decision. Speaking on TSN’s OverDrive, Bowman pushed back against all the outside noise about the superstar leaving Edmonton.

“I don’t like talking about hypotheticals,” Bowman said. “There’s a million different what-ifs that people could throw our way, and I think that’s not really a productive discussion. I love having him on our team here. I know he’s dedicated, and just to quote what he said, there’s nothing he wants more than to win the cup in Edmonton.”

Bowman made it clear that the organization is patient, ready to give McDavid time, and sees him as both their captain and centerpiece. He also emphasized that distractions won’t overshadow what matters most as the new season gets underway.

“That’s kind of what we’re all focused on right now, heading into next week, and looking forward to seeing camp start up,” Bowman added.

The Oilers have been through contract watch before. McDavid has been eligible to sign since July 1, but because nothing is done, the debates grow louder. He has openly said that winning is his top priority over maximizing dollars, yet he’s also hinted that every option is still possible.

Meanwhile, alleged frustrations have bubbled up about lost roster pieces, especially as younger players found new homes via offer sheets.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that McDavid, still in his prime, wants to see enough help around him before committing. That need for confidence in the supporting cast weighs on every front office move.

Even with these questions swirling, Bowman refuses to join the rumor mill. He circles back to comments made by McDavid himself about his desire to deliver a Stanley Cup to Edmonton. Sure, the Oilers have reached the Final in consecutive years, but the team still fell short against the Florida Panthers. For McDavid, that missing championship is the shadow hanging over a resume already packed with accolades.

“He’s working through things on his own, and we understand that. We’ll be patient,” Bowman continued.

Inside the locker room, nobody’s pushing for a quick answer. Goaltender Stuart Skinner explained that the group is “just leaving it be”. Leon Draisaitl, who just signed his own eight-year, $112 million extension last year, made clear he wants McDavid around but knows this choice is his to make with his family.

Why Is Connor McDavid’s Contract Saga a National Story?

The wait for McDavid’s decision isn’t just Edmonton’s problem now– it’s grabbed attention across Canada. Even Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney tossed a joke into a caucus meeting, saying “McDavid is unsigned” and that he hopes to see the Oilers’ captain in blue and orange for years.

That comment shows just how much McDavid’s next step matters to the Oilers and the entire country. On the ice, his list of achievements is hard to match. McDavid’s value is sky-high with 1,082 career points in 712 games, three Hart Trophies, and multiple Art Ross wins.

Analysts are already tossing around numbers for his next deal, possibly seeing an annual cap hit of $16 million or more, though options on contract length are still unknown. The only timeline that matters is the private one McDavid keeps to himself. He’s said he feels good about this year’s group, but admitted that it’s impossible to predict what changes over the next few years. It all adds up to an Oilers front office playing the waiting game– for now.

Edmonton is building for another deep run. The Oilers know everything rests on McDavid’s decision, but until he signs, the guessing game is the one thing nobody can avoid.
