Connor McDavid Gets Abstract on Oilers Wishlist As Edmonton Fans Panic Over Contract Extension

As free agency looms, Connor McDavid gets candid on contract decision as Oilers fans wonder whether he stays or moves on.

Connor McDavid’s future with the Edmonton Oilers has become the biggest storyline of the offseason. The 28-year-old superstar is heading into the final year of his contract. He’s eligible for an extension but hasn’t signed one yet.

McDavid has said all the right things about loving Edmonton and wanting to win there, but he’s also been upfront about not wanting to rush the decision. That mix has Oilers fans both hopeful and nervous, caught between trust in their captain and fear of losing him.

Is Connor McDavid Ready to Define His Future With the Oilers?

McDavid joined Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts Podcast with Elliotte Friedman, and naturally, his future came up. Asked what he needed to see before committing long-term, his reply wasn’t the typical checklist answer. “Everybody knows exactly what’s going on,” he said. “My wife and I love being here in Edmonton, and we have every intention to win here in Edmonton. I have all the faith in the world in this 2025-26 season. Beyond that, still remains to be seen.”

He added another line that stirred even more speculation: “All the pieces are here for ’25-26. It’s going to be a feeling. When the time’s right, the moment’s right, it will be a feeling.”

Those words sounded less like contract talk and more like philosophy, leaving fans to wonder what exactly “a feeling” means in hockey terms. Friedman later said he still expects McDavid to sign, but probably on a shorter deal rather than a full eight-year commitment.

The Oilers are set to open training camp this week. Their mission is clear: finally get over the hurdle and win a Stanley Cup. The last two seasons both ended the same way: losses to the Florida Panthers in the Final. For a team this talented, near misses are no longer good enough.

Everyone knows winning is the best pitch the franchise can make to its captain. McDavid’s résumé is already stacked with Hart Trophies, Art Ross titles, and even a Conn Smythe despite falling short of the Cup.

The one thing missing is the trophy itself, and it’s the one thing Edmonton has to deliver if they hope to convince him to stay long term.

McDavid hasn’t wavered from his stance: he’s not going to be rushed. “We have time. It’s our decision. We’ve earned that, and we’re gonna take our time with it,” he repeated on the podcast. He’s calm about the situation. Fans? Not so much.

Supporters are already worried about the idea of him hitting free agency next July. Analysts have pointed out that if negotiations drag into the season, the noise around it could become a distraction, whether McDavid wants it or not.

Still, he has brushed that aside, insisting he’s focused on the year ahead. “As of right now, just excited to get the season going, really,” he said, shifting the conversation back to hockey.

If the Oilers finally bring home a championship, it may be the easiest decision he ever makes. If not, the summer of 2026 could be the most dramatic in franchise history. Either way, McDavid holds the cards, and the Oilers know it.
