The Minnesota Vikings are back in the NFC North race after beating the Detroit Lions 27-24 on Sunday, but uncertainty still lingers at quarterback. With veteran Carson Wentz sidelined for the season and second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy carrying the offense in only his third career start, Minnesota may not be finished adding to its quarterback room before the trade deadline.
CBS Sports Report Suggests Minnesota Vikings Could Add QB Help
CBS Sports insider Johnathan Jones believes the Vikings could once again explore the quarterback market before Tuesday’s deadline. Jones wrote that Minnesota’s front office has a history of discussing quarterback additions and said he would not be surprised if those conversations lead to a late-round pick being dealt for a low-priced veteran who supports McCarthy without threatening his role as the starter.
Jones also pointed out that Minnesota brought in Daniel Jones last season after the Giants released him. The Vikings have only two active quarterbacks on the roster, McCarthy and undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. Veteran John Wolford was signed last week and remains on the practice squad.
On Monday, head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters he feels comfortable with the current group but left the door open for a move.
“We feel comfortable with the room,” O’Connell said, referencing McCarthy’s growth and Wolford’s familiarity with the system. “But we’ll always look for ways to strengthen our roster.”

A potential trade would focus on depth and leadership rather than competition. McCarthy is the clear No. 1 quarterback in Minnesota. He accounted for three total touchdowns on Sunday and ranks 23rd in PFSN’s QBi.
The Vikings aim to stay competitive in the NFC North while continuing to develop their young quarterback. A veteran presence would provide additional stability through the second half of the season.
Though no targets have been reported, Giants quarterback Russell Wilson is a logical fit. Wilson was benched this year for rookie Jaxson Dart and has not started since September. The Super Bowl champion quarterback would not threaten McCarthy as the starter and would provide the kind of veteran presence the Vikings’ quarterback room is missing.
Minnesota’s front office has shown it is not afraid to make calculated moves when it believes the team can compete. At 4-4 and one game behind the division lead, the Vikings appear focused on strengthening their roster for a playoff run instead of standing pat.
