Contract negotiations have been a major storyline during NFL training camps, with several stars around the league struggling to reach new deals with their teams. Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin was the first contract dispute to reach a breaking point, as he officially requested a trade out of Washington.
Now, an NFL insider is shedding light on where things stand between McLaurin and the team, and whether the relationship is still repairable.
Insider Details Tensions Between Terry McLaurin and Commanders Amid Trade Request
McLaurin has been with the Commanders since they drafted him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Even though the team has had struggles, he has always been a reliable player.
The six-year veteran just finished one of his best NFL seasons, catching 82 passes for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns. In return for his consistent play, McLaurin has been seeking a new contract, but the two sides have yet to reach an agreement.
After a long offseason full of drama, things came to a breaking point when McLaurin officially requested a trade yesterday.
While McLaurin’s trade request is tough news for the Commanders, it doesn’t mean they can’t still reach an agreement or that a trade is inevitable.
NFL insider Albert Breer explained that while the situation isn’t irreparable, the two sides went a full month without speaking. Since McLaurin ended his holdout and returned to training camp, progress has still been slow.

According to Breer, both sides disagree on salary and guaranteed money in the contract, and they are struggling to find common ground.
While Breer believes McLaurin and the Commanders could still reach a deal, the trade request shows the wide receiver is frustrated and trying to force the team’s hand after staying loyal through thick and thin.

While it’s understandable that the Commanders want to avoid overpaying McLaurin, this is the time to pay him what he’s asking for.
The team found its franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels during the 2024 NFL Draft, and since Daniels is still on his rookie contract, the team has the flexibility to pay McLaurin now.
McLaurin has been a staple of the Commanders for a long time, and to repair the relationship, the front office needs to step up and pay him before it becomes irreparable.
