The long-standing debate over grass vs. turf in the NFL continues to rage, as stadiums have implemented grass fields to host the World Cup. But they’ll go right back to the turf after the summer tournament concludes.
NFL players have complained about the risk of non-contact injuries on turf, and Mike Florio discussed how the league might handle complaints about the World Cup being played on grass, but their games will have artificial turf.
Mike Florio Addresses NFL’s Grass vs. Turf Debate
The players won’t appreciate what Florio said about this debate on “Pro Football Talk,” since the turf is coming back and they can’t change that. Moreover, the league won’t step in to change it either.
“They won’t do anything,” Florio said about the NFL’s approach to addressing the grass vs. turf debate. “I made this point the other day; this is now a collective bargaining issue. There is nothing the players can do to force the owners to choose to spend the money necessary to have high-quality grass in every venue.”
The current collective bargaining agreement was ratified in 2020 and runs through the 2030 season, meaning the players have limited leverage for immediate change.
But Florio describes the need for the players to advocate for grass fields during these collective bargaining debates. The important issue is that it is often a give-and-take process.

If the players are adamant about having all grass fields, they might have to give in to something proposed by the owners. But Florio isn’t convinced they are as set on grass fields as they may seem.
“It all comes down to whether or not the players would ever strike over the grass vs. turf issue. I don’t think they will,” Florio added. “So I don’t think it’s gonna happen unless they’re willing to give up something else they really want in order to get grass in every stadium.”
It is becoming a waiting game to see when the injuries pile up to the point that the players are ready to risk going on a strike to get what they want. MetLife Stadium has been one of the fields criticized for its turf. Notably, Aaron Rodgers and Nick Bosa have suffered season-ending injuries while playing there.

Last year, New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers’ season ended after his leg got caught in the turf and he tore his ACL.
The turf fields have had a major impact on many teams, resulting in season-altering injuries. The players aren’t happy with the teams that still have turf fields and are hoping to get all-grass fields eventually, but it’s not happening anytime soon.
