Mike Florio Puts Lions HC Dan Campbell’s Job Security at Risk: ‘Next Year Could Get Weird’

Mike Florio warns Dan Campbell’s future could hinge on results as the Detroit Lions face rising expectations after an underwhelming season.

Moments of public scrutiny in the NFL often arrive before results fully settle. As expectations rise, even a single underwhelming season can shift how a coach’s future is perceived. For Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions, that tension is beginning to surface in a way that could define what comes next.

Mike Florio Raises Stakes Around Dan Campbell’s Future in Detroit

Mike Florio, speaking on “Pro Football Talk,” placed the Lions firmly in a conversation they have long tried to escape. Referencing teams that have never reached the Super Bowl, Florio grouped the Lions alongside the Cleveland Browns and the Houston Texans, underscoring the historical pressure still hanging over the organization.

More notably, Florio hinted at how quickly things could turn if expectations are not met. “I think between Dan Campbell and Kevin O’Connell, if you don’t make the playoffs this year, next year could get weird, potentially, all depends on how badly this year goes.”

He went further, emphasizing that no coach is untouchable if results collapse, especially in a scenario resembling a “2-15, 1-16 debacle.”

That framing shifts Campbell’s situation from stable to conditional. A 9-8 record, which once represented progress in the Lions, is no longer enough to guarantee security. Instead, it now serves as a baseline that must be surpassed.

According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Lions had the 8th-ranked offense in the league last season with an impact score of 80.5. The team parted ways with offensive coordinator John Morton and replaced him with Drew Petzing in hopes of having a top-five offense in the league, which they achieved for three straight seasons from 2022 to 2024.

Campbell, however, appears to be less focused on external pressure and more on internal identity. Speaking about the team’s direction, he stressed the importance of edge and competitiveness over pure talent.

“Everybody wants talent, I’ll always want talent, but it’s always nice to have a little bit of saltiness to you over the talent that lacks saltiness,” Campbell said, reflecting on what made earlier iterations of his roster effective.

He pointed specifically to the balance his staff is trying to strike by integrating younger players. While youth may bring inconsistency, Campbell believes it also introduces urgency and intensity. His comments suggest that the Lions’ next step is not just about improving skill but restoring a mindset that defined their earlier rise.

The contrast between Florio’s external evaluation and Campbell’s internal philosophy is telling. Florio’s perspective is rooted in results and historical context, where failure to progress could quickly lead to instability.

Campbell’s approach, by comparison, focuses on culture, suggesting that sustained success comes from rediscovering a competitive edge rather than chasing short-term fixes.

Still, those two viewpoints are not mutually exclusive. If the Lions fail to translate that renewed “saltiness” into wins, Florio’s warning becomes far more relevant. A second consecutive step backward would not just disappoint, it would challenge the trajectory Campbell has worked to build.

Ultimately, the Lions enter 2026 at a crossroads. The standard has clearly shifted under Campbell, but with that shift comes heightened accountability. Whether the Lions meet those expectations or fall short may determine whether stability holds or, as Florio suggested, things start to “get weird.”
