‘What in the World’ — Jon Gruden, NFL Analysts React to Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker’s ‘Insane’ 69-Yard FG in Preseason

Patrick Mahomes is ready for the season with the Chiefs, and it seems like kicker Harrison Butker is also gearing to break records.

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs did not have the season they wanted. QB Patrick Mahomes went down with an injury, and the team completely fell apart after that, but this year is supposed to be different.

Mahomes is ready for the campaign, Travis Kelce is likely competing in his final season, and it seems like Harrison Butker is ready to break records.

Harrison Butker Makes Incredible Field Goal

During the Chiefs’ second preseason game of the year, Kansas City faced off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It wasn’t an especially exciting game in the first half, but it did end with a bang.

With seconds left on the clock, the Chiefs sent out Butker to attempt a 69-yard field goal, which is 1 yard longer than Cam Little’s record-breaking kick last season. Although the field goal would not count towards the record, it was going to be incredible if Butker made this kick. Well, he didn’t just make it; he would have probably made it from even further out.

After this exciting moment from the Chiefs, the NFL World had its reactions:

NFL analytics expert Warren Sharp believed that Butker would have made the field goal from 75 yards out. He wrote, “a FG from 69 yards! and it HIT THE NET??? this would be good from 75 yards easy”.

NFL reporter Andrew Siciliano also believed Butker would have made it from longer: “Harrison Butker just hit a 69-yard field goal that would have been good from 75.”

And so did reporter Scott Abraham, who said, “Would have been good from 75 yards too. Insane.”

Former NFL HC Jon Gruden, who was calling the Chiefs-Buccaneers game, posted a quote from the clip of Butker making the kick: “‘He’ll kick your Butker!’ 69 Yarder from the Chiefs kicker!!”

Former NFL strategy and analytics coach Ryan Paganetti joked that a team now needs to one-up this kick: “We need one of these teams to kneel it at the -47 so they can try from 71.”

Sports podcaster Braiden Turner believes the kick would have been good from even further than 75 yards, “This (expletive) was good from 75+ what in the world”.

Writer Rany Jazayerli reminded people how important Butker can be for this Chiefs team. He said, “People have forgotten what an asset Harrison Butker is with two healthy legs. This came at sea level with room to spare. In Denver, he might have hit from 80 yards. I would absolutely love to see him try that one day.”

If the Chiefs are set to make another playoff run, Butker is going to be an extremely important piece for this team. But last season, he was not good enough.

Butker ranked 28th in PFN’s Kicker Impact Metric last year, which is nowhere near good enough. Maybe this kick could be the start of a much better season.
