It was a testament to Kyle Shanahan’s coaching that the San Francisco 49ers were a force to be reckoned with in the NFC. The entire roster was devastated by injuries right from the start of the year, but they were able to persevere.
The defense suffered debilitating injuries, such as the torn ACL to former Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa. That trend continued all the way to the postseason, where superstar tight end George Kittle suffered a torn Achilles. Heading into next year, they are hoping for better health for their roster.

The defensive injuries, as they continued to pile on, affected their efficiency as well. By the end of the year, the team ranked in the bottom 10 on PFSN’s NFL Defense Impact Metrics. It became the story of their playoffs, where they lost to the Seattle Seahawks 41-6.
Unfortunately, the story of the offense wasn’t much better. The wide receiver room was in shambles all year long, resulting in Christian McCaffrey leading the team in targets and receptions by a wide margin.
Brock Purdy missed a chunk of the year with turf toe, and the situation in San Francisco was grim, to say the least. In that stretch, Kittle became a saving grace, as he put up 628 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 games, ranking No. 5 on PFSN’s TE Impact.
He was critical to the team winning 12 games in a loaded NFC West. But against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round, he hauled in just one catch for six yards before the torn Achilles ended his season.
Going into next year, the 49ers have to be hoping for a healthier year for their roster. And the early returns are at least positive in that regard. Nick Wagoner of ESPN brought the latest news directly from general manager John Lynch.
First, the news surrounded the defensive star, as Wagoner wrote on X, “#49ers expecting DEs Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams to be ready for training camp in some capacity (potentially eased back in).”

Next came the news surrounding the seven-time Pro Bowler, whose injury came far later in the year. But the news was optimistic on that note as well: “John Lynch says team is ‘hopeful’ that TE George Kittle will be available in Week 1, noting that he’s progressing well from Achilles injury.”
It remains to be seen if this change in luck can continue for San Francisco the entire year. But for the time being, fans of the 49ers can take this news with immense joy.
