J.J. McCarthy Injury Update: Will the Vikings QB Start in Week 14?

J.J. McCarthy nears a Week 14 return as the Vikings look to revive a struggling offense amid injuries and uncertainty.

The Minnesota Vikings reach Week 14, balancing uncertainty with a rare bit of optimism. Following weeks defined by injuries, stalled drives, and a shutout loss, the team finally received a development that could influence the direction of its season.

Whether that shift becomes meaningful depends on how their young quarterback responds in the coming days.

How Does J.J. McCarthy’s Status Shape the Minnesota Vikings’ Path?

J.J. McCarthy has been sidelined since suffering a concussion during the Vikings’ 23-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Underdog NFL reported on X that he is now entirely symptom-free and will take part in a full practice session on Wednesday. If he handles that workload without any setbacks, he is expected to start Sunday’s home matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed McCarthy’s progress, saying, “He’s symptom-free and now the last phase I believe of the protocol is just he needs to just have a full practice day, and that should come on Wednesday.” O’Connell added that a standard practice week would put McCarthy in a position to reclaim the starting job.

McCarthy’s absence opened the door for undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who struggled in a 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Brosmer completed 19 of 30 attempts for 126 yards with four interceptions, reflecting the broader issues across the Vikings’ offense.

The Vikings have scored just six points in their last eight quarters and hold the league’s No. 29-ranked unit.

Individually, McCarthy is still searching for a consistent footing. He has thrown for 929 yards with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 54.1 percent of his passes. PFSN’s QB Impact metric lists him with a QB Impact Score of 52.5, receiving an F grade, ranking 40th this season and 897th overall since 2000.

He has started six games and completed 86 of 159 passes, numbers that match the dataset’s season averages. These metrics highlight both his potential and the urgency behind his development.

McCarthy will have an opportunity to reset against a Commanders defense that has struggled throughout the season, allowing high totals in yards, points, and passing production. The Vikings may also regain key offensive linemen, with O’Connell noting that Christian Darrisaw, Donovan Jackson, and Ryan Kelly all have a chance to return in Week 14.

O’Connell summarized the situation by emphasizing the importance of adapting to challenges, stating that his focus remains on transforming the offense and finding ways to win games. How McCarthy performs in his return will determine whether the Vikings can stabilize their season over the remaining five contests.
