Jahmyr Gibbs Fantasy Value: Should You Trade the Lions RB After Big Week 8?

Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs has been a top five fantasy running back over the last two games. Should you trade him in fantasy before David Montgomery returns?

Detroit Lions rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs has rewarded fantasy football managers who stayed the course through his slow start with 57.5 fantasy points over the last two games. However, with RB David Montgomery set to return in the near future, should fantasy managers consider trading Gibbs at his highest value before Montgomery returns? Let’s take a closer look.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ Rest-of-Season Outlook

After a slow start to his rookie season, Gibbs has seen his usage exponentially increase over the last two weeks. He produced a season-high 27.6 fantasy points in PPR formats with 126 total yards and a score on 20 total touches against the Baltimore Ravens. His breakout performance was immediately followed up with the Lions feeding him 11 total touches in the first quarter Monday night against the Las Vegas Raiders.

His first quarter was only a tease of things to come. Gibbs posted another monster fantasy performance in Week 9, finishing with 189 total yards and a score on a career-high 31 total touches.

The big question that remains is this: Exactly how confident should fantasy managers be in inserting Gibbs into their fantasy starting lineup when Montgomery returns?

Gibbs was outscored by Montgomery in every game they played together over the first four weeks of the 2023 season. Gibbs failed to surpass 10 fantasy points in three of the Lions’ first four contests while being out-touched by Montgomery 72 to 53 — even with Montgomery inactive for one of those games.

The TD production was an even tougher pill to swallow for Gibbs’ managers. Montgomery produced five scores to Gibbs’ zero during that four-game stretch.

The Lions have already proven that Montgomery will be their leading ball carrier when healthy, and he could return to the lineup as soon as this week.

If you still believe Gibbs will lead this backfield in 2023, I imagine you will start Gibbs even when Montgomery returns. Unfortunately, I tend to believe Gibbs will still see frustrating usage for fantasy managers once Montgomery is back in the fold.

Should You Trade Jahmyr Gibbs in Fantasy Football?

Are you considering trading Gibbs? Our PFN Trade Analyzer allows you to find the best trades to make in seconds! It also allows us to see trending searches, and we’ve compiled a few of the most popular below.

Should You Trade Jahmyr Gibbs for Tony Pollard?

While Tony Pollard has been a bit of a fantasy disappointment this season, his role feels far more secure than Gibbs’ at the moment. Pollard is the unquestioned bellcow back in Dallas for the Cowboys, while Montgomery has proven to cap Gibbs’ fantasy ceiling when both are in the lineup. I would move off of Gibbs to acquire Pollard.

Should You Trade Jahmyr Gibbs for David Montgomery?

As detailed above, Montgomery has been the better fantasy football option when both players are in the lineup. Regardless of who the more efficient player is, Montgomery is the preferred leading ball carrier and goal-line option of these two players. If you could guarantee me that Montgomery returns to the lineup this week, then I would trade Gibbs for Montgomery.

Should You Trade Jahmyr Gibbs for Davante Adams?

Davante Adams has been one of the most confusing cases in all of fantasy football this season. His lack of production in a struggling offense should certainly be sending up some red flags for his fantasy outlook for the remainder of the season. Gibbs has proven over the last two weeks what his fantasy ceiling is in this offense — without Montgomery in the lineup.

Once Montgomery returns, Gibbs is likely to be in a frustrating timeshare again. I don’t feel great about acquiring Adams right now, but I do expect better days ahead for a proven fantasy superstar moving forward. I would deal Gibbs for Adams right now.
